Lake Tahoe Summerfest Classic Concert series launches 2015 season with 'Passport to a World of Music'

The three weekend series of nine different concerts will transport attendees through masterpieces translated by renowned artists and a nationally acclaimed orchestra of 40 players.
Prescribed burns at Galena Commons planned for Tuesday and Wednesday
Submitted by editor on Mon, 04/27/2015 - 3:31pmThe Nevada Division of Forestry will be conducting prescribed burns at Galena Forest Estates within an undeveloped common area, located off of Joy Lake Road, on Tuesday, April 28, and Wednesday, April 29, weather permitting.
Ten acres, with about 30 burn piles, will be burned over the next two days. Signs will be posted on Joy Lake Road and the junction of Joy Lake Road and Mount Rose Highway.

The Carson City Classic Cinema Club is a group of classic movie fans who present a film, produced prior to 1970, on the first Tuesday of each month. Our mission is to raise funds to help provide tools to our youth who wish to study the arts, but may be in need of resources.

Submitted by editor on Wed, 04/22/2015 - 4:47pmPoetry lovers are in for a treat on Thursday, May 7, at Western Nevada College in Carson City. Published poets Laura Wetherington and Jared Stanley are scheduled to read starting at 4 p.m. in WNC’s Main Gallery.
“I don't know how long it's been since WNC had poets read here who have actually published books, but it's been quite a while,” said Douglas Barrett, Ph.D., an English instructor at WNC, is coordinating the event.
Barrett said that Wetherington and Stanley, who teach at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village, bring a contemporary style to poetry.

Who Stole Winter? Lake Tahoe ski resort stalwart talks about drought impact

"Change is happening, Clearly we're in a drought, whether it's here for short term, or long term, time will tell," said Rice, the vice president and general manager of Sierra-at-Tahoe, long considered one of the nation's best managed, economically and environmentally efficient ski resorts. "The ski industry has the most to lose in a drought."
Lake Tahoe stewardship programs aim to improve defensible space

The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team implements forest thinning, prescribed fire and defensible space programs to reduce wildfire risk, but they need the public’s help to create Fire Adapted Communities at Lake Tahoe.

Although weather conditions allow for the early sale of permits, areas to obtain fuelwood will be limited because not all gates and roads are open.
Supervisors look to fill four spots on Shade Tree Council

The Shade Tree Council provides advice to the Board of Supervisors on matters concerning the development, maintenance, management and promotion of a safe, healthy and attractive urban forest in Carson City.

Snow: Our Sierra Nevada snowpack is either non-existent or minimal at best. There are very few snowdrifts across higher elevation hiking trails. Deep snowfields and snowdrifts in the mountains are things of the past. The peaks are bare rather than smooth white with lots of snow.

Nevada wildlife officials seek information on bull elk poaching in northern Elko County
Submitted by editor on Fri, 04/03/2015 - 3:41pmNevada game wardens are seeking any tips or information on a poached bull elk found on the south side of the Meadow Creek-Jarbidge road in Hunt Unit 071, 10 miles west of the Diamond A Ranch in northern Elko County.
“The bull was shot through the heart and left to rot only 50 yards from Forest Road 071,” said Jason Jackson, game warden for the Nevada Department of Wildlife. “We really want to catch the criminal that stole Nevada’s resources by poaching and wasting this animal.”
Forest Service: Wildfire in Desolation Wilderness started by illegal campfire

Man jailed on burglary charges after discovery of backpacks, safe filled with jewelry
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 03/11/2015 - 1:02pmA 25-year-old firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service was arrested Thursday, March 5 and remains in jail on suspicion of felony burglary, possession of stolen property and drug charges, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Rory William Torvik of Carson City was arrested following an investigation that led to the recovery of a safe and backpacks filled with stolen jewelry.
