Nevada State Lands accepts deed making Walker River State Recreation Area an official park

YERINGTON, Nev. – The creation of a new Nevada State Park, known as the Walker River State Recreation Area is official. on Wednesday, July 19, the Nevada Division of State Lands accepted the gift deeds facilitated by the Walker Basin Conservancy, and will assign the donated property to the Nevada Division of State Parks for the development and management of the new park along the East Walker River in Lyon and Mineral counties.

What to do, what to do? That’s the question that starts most every weekend. If you’ve got kids, test their mettle at the annual Capitol City Triathlon. Open to kids of all ages, they will bike, run, and swim their way to the finish line. The third annual Sassabration event kicks off with a multi-colored, costume bike parade from the Brewery Arts Center to the celebration at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint. Multiple bands, vendors, non-profit booths, free swimming at the Carson Hot Springs, not to mention the yummy food and drink available make this a not-to-be-missed festival.

Chili cooks compete in Carson City on behalf of veterans

Two dozen competitive chili cooks armed with ladels and their top-secret recipes stormed the front lawn of Glen Eagles Restaurant Saturday morning to tempt the palates of guests attending the annual High Sierra and Nevada Capitol Regional Chili Cook Off.

Gov. Brian Sandoval signed laws Monday that create the framework for the implementation of recreational marijuana, a measure establishing the Walker River State Recreation Area and additional laws aimed at ensuring Nevada’s students have safe learning environments.

Memorial Weekend activities continue Sunday into Monday

Sunday, April 30: Things to do around Carson City and beyond

Take advantage of the spring sunshine and seize the day. Virginia City roars with the sound of their annual Grand Prix. Beer and brats aren’t usually associated with ballet, but the Sierra Nevada Ballet makes the annual event at the Brewery Arts Center a great time for all. The Earth Spirit Faire wraps up its weekend of wellness at the Community Center. Head to Reno for a Cinco De Mayo Celebration at the Grand Sierra that features musicians, cuisine, and carnival rides.

Vehicle chase ends in crash in downtown Carson City

12:31PM: The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified the driver as Jesus Herrarea-Casas from South Lake Tahoe. He was placed under arrest and taken to Carson City Sheriff’s Office for booking for Eluding Police, Reckless driving, Disregard Traffic control device(s), Speeding, and driving without a valid license. He may also be charged with DUI, pending the test results.

UPDATE 10:58AM: Carson Street is now open following this morning's incident and investigation involving a vehicle pursuit that began on Highway 50 at Spooner Summit and ended with a crash and arrest at Proctor and Carson Street.

A man who led Nevada Highway Patrol on a chase that began on U.S. 50 on Spooner Summit ended just before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday in a crash in downtown Carson City.

Drone use for search and rescue will be explored at UNR national symposium

Heading a stellar line-up of speakers for the second annual UAS Search and Rescue Symposium, Gene Robinson, who literally wrote the book on how to use drones for search and rescue and disasters, will talk about how to train public safety agencies in the use of aerial and ground robots in emergency response.
