Richard Scott, a Carson City teacher for 25 years, died Friday, February 19, 2016, of respiratory failure. He was 69. Richard taught English and reading at Eagle Valley Middle School for 23 years. He cared for all of his students and tried to teach them to be thinkers and to relate their emotions to literature. He was active in Boy Scouts, 4-H Guide Dogs for the Blind, Kiwanis, and shooting sports.
He loved fishing and camping. His latest message for his former students is to QUIT SMOKING!

Each year on February 14th many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “Valentine.” Celebrating with dinner and drink is also a popular way of sharing this special day. This year, show your valentine that you truly care for them. Choose not to drink and drive after your special evening.

Carol asked me recently “Are there any flowers that deer won’t eat?” This is a question I am asked repeatedly. Are there any deer resistant plants? Well, it depends. A sufficiently hungry deer will find almost any plant palatable.

Chile Irwin Bartels was born on March 17, 1997 to Amy Jo and Jason Bartels. He was the middle child sandwiched between his two sisters, Wednesday and Willow, and the beloved grandson of Colleen Mortimer, Marshall Bartels, Judy and John Procaccini.

Chile was a faithful son and was at his family’s side whenever they needed him. Chile’s BIG spirit and personality could barely be contained by his six foot, four-inch frame. He had a special gift for making his sisters laugh, and for teasing them unmercifully. The three of them loved sharing movie and Mario Kart marathons.

Last week I visited with the Desert Gardeners Club in Carson City. I asked the gardeners to give me some ideas for articles. Donna wanted to know how to grow hydrangeas in our area. Hydrangeas are beautiful plants with large deep green leaves, which sometimes provide red fall color. They have spectacular flowers that can be long lasting, even holding their beauty when dried. Some flowers are large balls. Others look like halos of lovely blooms. Some are the size of dinner plates.

Youth Theatre Carson City will hold auditions this Saturday for Disney’s "Alice in Wonderland, Jr." The show will run four performances, April 8-10 in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.

We are looking for actors, singers, and dancers grades K-12, who will be cast to play all the classic characters including Alice, The White Rabbit, The Mad Hatter, The Cheshire Cat, and of course, The evil Queen of Hearts – plus a host of other colorful characters.

The annual talent show is coming up at Carson High School. The event will take place 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Carson Community Center. Auditions for the talent show will be on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2:05 p.m. in the upstairs cafeteria at CHS. Audition applications can be picked up from room No. 243 or the office. The CHS talent show is only open to ninth through 12th graders at CHS and cash prizes are awarded. The CHS chapter of FBLA is hosting this event. 'Real Life of College' Seminar

Robert William Stewart, 76, passed away due to natural causes on January 3, 2016 in Carson City, Nevada. Mr. Stewart was born October 13, 1939 in Pepin, Wisconsin and moved to Nevada in 1963.

I have a confession to make. For years, I have spoken disparagingly about people who prune their plants, particularly junipers, into little green meatballs with power hedge trimmers. However, recently I borrowed my friend Roni’s electric hedge trimmer and I think I’m hooked. I had seen her pruning her lavender plants with it last year. It took her about 15 minutes to prune all the dead flowers off her plants while it took me hours to do mine by hand, cut by cut.

Long time community events coordinator Fred Nietz, whose company Arlington Group Events started the very first Silver and Snowflakes Tree Lighting for Carson City Mainstreet, now in its 25th year, passed away Tuesday at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. He was 71.

The works of four Carson City artists were recognized Monday in a statewide art contest using recyclable material.
Student artists Stella Thornton and Jessica Preston, and adult artists Lisa Sheppard and Emily J. Cervi were listed as having either placed or received honorable mentions as part of the contest to recognize America Recycles Day.

In the age of hipster coffeehouses springing forth on every corner, sometimes you just want the original. For Carson City residents that’s Comma Coffee, that celebrated 15 years of brewing bliss, on Saturday following the Nevada Day Parade.

The Nevada State Museum celebrates El Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2015. Day of the Dead is a multicultural celebration of life through death. In this wholesome family holiday, participants learn to deal with death in a healthy way by celebrating the lives of dear ones that has passed away. This year’s keynote address, Day of the Dead: A Celebration of Life by Deborah Stevenson, curator of education, begins at 11 a.m.

More than 125 students were awarded over $150,000 across 90 different scholarships at the Western Nevada College Foundation 16th Annual Scholarship Appreciation and Recognition reception in Carson City. Student award recipients and their families and scholarship donors filled the Carson Nugget ballroom Friday, Oct. 16.

This is mid-October and whether or not you are ready, be advised that winter is sneaking up on us.
As one who has lived in Carson City most of my life, I have learned through the years that one day the weather can be gorgeous and then the next day: Bam, the countryside is covered with a deep layer of snow.

And once the snow arrives, it is followed by ice and cold weather, which will normally be with us into the month of March.

Since the microclimate around our house has temperatures similar to those at South Lake Tahoe, we are more likely to freeze than Carson City or Minden. Cold air is trapped on our property. At this time of year, I pay attention to the weather or lose my plants.

Successful conservation actions from a collaborative Lake Tahoe partnership spanning the past 15 years have helped the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decide Wednesday that Tahoe yellow cress, a flowering perennial plant in the mustard family found only along the popular lake’s sandy shoreline, does not warrant federal protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Readers often ask me when vegetables are ready for harvest. Some veggies have a long harvest window, but others may be tasty one day and bitter the next. Of course, if a freeze is expected, many of our vegetables end up being harvested early. I’ve ripened many a green tomato on the windowsill.

Carson City residents gathered Friday in Mills Park with law officers and firefighters to remember the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The service was held surrounding a I-beam memorial that was given to Carson City in 2010 by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Among the flowers placed on the beam was as an American flag presented to the Carson City Fire Department by Michael Manfredo. The flag was given to the Carson City man by a son of one of the 343 fighters killed at the World Trade Center that day.

After spending his 64th birthday with his closest family, and fulfilling his wish to live to 64 years of age and force his family to sing, “When I'm 64,” to him, Ron Gonzales, known to most as Gonzo, died at 2:33 a.m. August 14, after suffering from COPD for decades. He spent his last week pleasantly, able to read for the first time in several years after suffering deteriorating eyesight – he'd received a Kindle for his birthday. His last day was spent with his granddaughter and wife, having fun with those he loved.

April showers may bring May flowers, but May showers apparently saved this year’s chukar hunting season. This year’s Nevada Chukar Hunting Forecast, an annual report put out by the Nevada Department of Wildlife that uses data from aerial surveys that take place across 13 different survey plots, was recently released.
