Fred Nietz, businessman and Carson City community events organizer, dies
Long time community events coordinator Fred Nietz, whose company Arlington Group Events started the very first Silver and Snowflakes Tree Lighting for Carson City Mainstreet, now in its 25th year, passed away Tuesday at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. He was 71.
Nietz was actively involved in the Carson City community and served on the Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee. He started producing events like chili cook offs, trail walks, and Handshake Day/Downtown A-Fair under the auspices of Carson City Mainstreet.
Fred formed his own company, Arlington Group Events, which produced many area events, including the Carson City Rendezvous, Virginia City Camel Races, Lyon County Fly-In, Legends of the West, and the annual Christmas Tree Lighting. Fred was in the events business for more than 20 years.
Frederick George Nietz Jr. was born March 31, 1944 in Dover, New Jersey. He was born to Frederick G. Nietz Sr. and Christina (Bogden) Nietz. The family moved to Butte MT when Fred was 5. He attended St. Patrick's School and Butte High. They later moved to Grants, NM. Fred worked summers in the uranium mill for Kerr McGee. He attended Arizona State University where he married Mary Chaimie Wooleridge. At ASU he made many life-long friends.
He operated his own photography studio, Daily Rocket Studios.
Later, Fred moved to San Francisco where he met his future wife, Maxine Hauser. He worked in construction and carpentry. Fred married Maxine in Reno in 1985 and moved to Carson City in 1989 where they lived in an 1874 home in the Historic District.
Fred loved Nevada history, panning for gold, blues music, and photography. He had an acerbic wit and loved dry humor. He traveled to Mexico often throughout his life and enjoyed its history and culture. He leaves behind his wife, Maxine, a sister, Patricia Greene of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and an extended family of friends. No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Carson City F.I.S.H.
