This my annual reminder that many nearby California waters will close to
fishing on November 15…that’s this coming Tuesday.

That’s only six days from now, so if you want to fish any of them, you better
hustle because you are running out of time.

Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year
(April 28, 2012), and that is a long time to wait to wet your line.
Here is a partial list of some of the nearby waters that will be closing:

Alpine County:
The East Carson River (with the exception of the stretch from Hangman’s

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested transient Joshua Lieberman, 30, at the corner of Fall and Long streets Wednesday afternoon, for felony possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched after a call was placed about a person possibly selling drugs. Deputies spotted the subject - later identified as Lieberman - near the FISH store, acting nervously and clenching his left fist. Being told to relax made the subject more nervous.

On Wednesday morning Oct. 19 Elaine and I went fishing at Lake Tahoe for Mackinaw lake trout with our longtime good friend and sport fishing guide, Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters outfitted South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
“Gino” has fished Tahoe for some thirty years (the last 13 years as a fishing guide) and is one of the top, if not the top, guides at that lake.

A city and two nonprofit groups’ combined commitments more than double the reward offered for information on a brutal mountain lion killing.
The City of Calabasas in eastern Los Angeles County has matched the $5,000 reward being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of poachers who killed a mountain lion in the Santa Monica Mountains last month.
Two other groups put up an additional $1,700 for a total reward of $11,700.

As pioneers made their way through the Shasta Cascade Mountain Range, there was a stream some had to cross.
While a couple of pioneers were crossing this stream, one of their hats had fallen off of their head and landed in the water.

With winter weather creeping around the corner, and with many California waters scheduled to close for the year on Nov. 15, this is my annual reminder for those Carson City area fishermen who plan to hang it up for the year after a few more fall casts.
Many of you prefer not to fish during the winter months or have absolutely no interest in ice fishing, so this article is specifically written for you. (Hmmm, come to think of it, this article is also worth reading by those of you who plan to continue fishing until the weather warms back up, again).

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites residents and visitors to attend the Kokanee Salmon Festival, which celebrates the annual fall migration of Kokanee salmon at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. The event takes place the weekend of October 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. The Visitor Center is located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89.

Pyramid Lake, located about 30 miles north of Sparks, will open on Saturday, Oct. 1 to fishing for Lahontan cutthroat trout.
That large, desert lake (roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) has a three-month trout closure, each year, from July 1 to Sept. 30.

Here are the most recent fish plants in Western Nevada by state's Division of Wildlife. For information, call the NDOW headquarters in Reno at (775) 688-1500 during regular business hours.

Another season has begun for the Fruit Barons of Carson City. Sponsored by Healthy Trees, a dedicated group of local volunteers can be seen up in the tree tops on any given morning. With an abundance of fruit that would otherwise go to waste, the Fruit Barons make sure it reaches the community instead. Foraging 275 pounds on their first day, Fruit Barons are still welcoming fruit tree donors please call (775) 220-6330 to donate. Gearing up for their second season Fruit Barons share the bounty with local organizations including FISH, Advocates, Rom Woods, Senior Center and many more.

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) invites nonprofit organizations to help wildlife by auctioning big game hunting license tags for the 2012-13 season. These tags will allow the highest bidder to hunt bighorn sheep, deer, elk and pronghorn antelope in California. There are only 13 of these special fund-raising tags reserved for 501(c)(3) nonprofit groups to sell and they’re sure to draw many participants to any fund-raising event.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) has scheduled a special upland game season just for youth hunters. This statewide season is Sept. 24-25 and is open only to hunters 15 years of age or younger. Participants will have the opportunity to hunt chukar and Hungarian partridge, California, Gambel's and Scaled quail, and rabbits.

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has confirmed reports of dead red abalone and sea stars inside coves along the coast in Sonoma County.
The number of dead and dying abalone is not known but reports have come from Bodega Bay, Russian Gulch, Fort Ross, Timber Cove and Salt Point State Park, beginning on August 27.
DFG biologists and game wardens have collected abalone, mussels and water samples and are continuing to document reports from the public.

California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) biologists say that sea lions are responsible for recent pelican deaths in the San Luis Obispo area.
Residents and local law enforcement have been finding the carcasses of California Brown Pelicans along the beaches for the past few days.
More than a dozen of the large aquatic birds have been injured or killed by large puncture wounds.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — As I noted earlier this year, one of California’s two Free Fishing Days will be over the Labor Day holiday weekend on Saturday, Sept. 3.
The other Free Fishing Day was back on July 2. You can fish, all day, without a fishing license.
You will be able to fish wherever you like in California, without the need for a fishing license. However, you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.
