Firefighter crews work Genoa Peak Fire visible in Carson Valley that started Tuesday
With firefighting efforts focused Tuesday on the Voltaire Fire in Carson City, a small fire two miles south of Spooner Summit continues to burn, but has not had a rapid spread, fire officials said Wednesday.
Firefighters are actively suppressing the 10-15 acre Genoa Peak Fire on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Carson Ranger District. The lightning caused Genoa Peak Fire was reported Tuesday at 2 p.m., around the same time as the Voltaire Fire started in Carson City.
The fire, visible throughout Carson Valley, is five percent contained and creeping and smoldering in timber and brush. No structures are threatened at this time. The fire has became a concern among many Carson Valley residents, especially since it left a bright orange glow to the west as it burned overnight.
There are 16 personnel currently fighting the fire with the assistance of two helicopters, according to Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
Additionally, the Boise Hotshots and a third helicopter will arrive on scene later today to help with the fire fighting effort. With the steep and rocky terrain and maintaining an emphasis on firefighter safety, the Incident Commander expects to have the fire 40 percent contained by the end of the day.
The Genoa Peak Fire is visible from Jacks Valley Road. Motorist are encouraged to maintain safe speeds and to focus on driving. Slowing down to watch the fire will increase traffic congestion and risk of vehicle accidents.
