Nevada Humanities will welcome author Julie Buntin at a series of events throughout Northern Nevada during the month of May. Ms. Buntin is the author of Marlena: A Novel, the 2018 pick for Nevada Reads — a statewide, public book club. Nevada Reads invites Nevadans to read selected works of literature and to come together in their communities to share the ideas and perceptions inspired by the book club selections.

SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. – Fort Churchill State Historic Park is offering a variety of ranger-led programs during the month of April. Programs highlight the area’s rich history and abundant natural resources.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "Works: Some Water Some Welded," with artwork by artists Susan Glaser Church and Stephen Reid at the city’s Sierra Room located in the Community Center, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public from March 2 – June 30, 2018. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Friday, March 2, 5-7pm in the Sierra Room.

A slow and leisurely Sunday morning yoga practice. This practice will gently warm you up and prepare your body and mind for deeper opening and exploration. The class finishes with a lovely guided meditation.

This practice is based on the Tibetan Yoga chakra balancing series, allowing each student to create a smooth flow of balanced, calm energy. The extra time allows you to deepen into each asana in a way that isn’t available in a shorter class. This deepening relaxes and heals body and mind, reversing the effects of anxiety and chronic stress. (We could all use a little of that!)

On December 10th we made the drive to Smith Valley for some exploration of the Pine Grove Hills. This turned out to be a good time to ride this area. Our eyes are wonderful, but only glimpse a small bit of the spectrum of electromagnetic energy produced by stars. To learn more about the universe beyond Earth’s atmosphere, scientists use instruments that can see beyond visible light. We will explore how this is done through telescopes and provide some simple tools that let you acquire some superhuman powers as well!

Since the 2014-2015 school year, all high school juniors in the State of Nevada are required to take the ACT. This requirement comes as the Nevada Department of Education tries to identify the level of college readiness that public high schools are providing.

The Carson City Library celebrated Monday morning's solar eclipse in all its spectacular glory. Hundreds turned out for the NASA-themed event complete with safety viewing glasses, information booths and more.

UPDATE SUNDAY, AUG. 20: For Monday's eclipse program, the Carson City Library is taking walk ins, however they will not be guaranteed eclipse safety glasses. The library will have other activities available and a telescope with a solar filter.

On August 1, 2017, Comstock Mining, Inc. (CMI) released its quarterly report, which included a number of statements and topics important to Silver City. CMI’s ultimate goal of an open pit mine in Silver City remains unchanged. The company plans to begin the permitting process for the Dayton Mine by the end of the year. “We are marching toward Dayton feasibility come hell or high water,” according to company CEO Corrado DeGasperis, with production plans ready to go in two years.

Carson City’s National Night Out, the safest outdoor party of the summer, arrives this Tuesday, August 1 at Mills Park, with a host of games, music, activities, and refreshments offered from dozens of agencies and community service organizations designed to promote public safety, awareness and community.

The Carson City School District has partnered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada to house a new Pre-K (preschool) classroom at the Carson City clubhouse located at 1870 Russell Way. Twenty students between the ages of 4 and 5 will receive full-day instruction this school year Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Carson City Library has been selected through a competitive application process to be part of NASA@ My Library, an initiative to engage public audiences nationwide in informal and lifelong learning with the excitement of NASA exploration and discovery.

The Carson City Visitors Bureau is one 75 nonprofit organizations selected to receive the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Grant, a literary grant challenging communities to create month-long programming around the themes of selected novels.

CARSON CITY — Tedra “Teddy” Cook, 7th grade teacher at Carson Middle School, was honored last night as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year. Additionally, Bridget Gordon, 21st Century Solutions Program coordinator at Carson High School, was recognized as the Classified Employee of the Year for the district.
