Meet local historical authors Laura Tennant and Dennis Cassinelli on Saturday, April 30, 3 p.m. to be entertained while learning local history at the Dayton Branch Library, 321 Old Dayton Valley Road, Dayton.

The Dayton Library will be hosting their 3rd annual trunk-or-treat on Wednesday October 28th, 2020 from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM. This year's event will be a contact-less drive-thru. We are still in need of volunteers to decorate their cars and pass out candy. We are also accepting donations of candy through October 23rd. Heading into the last weekend of January there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Chinese New Year Celebration at the Nevada State Museum and the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. The Carson Comedy Club hosts its first Military Appreciation Night on Friday at the Carson Nugget. Carson Valley’s 18th annual Eagles and AG Photo Contest will be underway and live music will keep the Silver State buzzing with excitement. Read on for more information.

The Misfits Theater Group in Dayton is holding auditions for its Spring melodrama “Showdown at Phingerdoo or Bad Day at Dead Frog Flats” on Sunday, January 26 at 6 p.m. at the Dayton Library, 321 Dayton Valley Rd, Dayton. This old-time melodrama directed by Andra Woolman is set in the Wild West and has a cast of eight (8) men and five (5) women. As with all melodramas, good triumphs over evil, love wins out, and laughs abound! Performance dates are April 24, 25, 26 and May 1, 2, 3 at the Odeon Hall in Dayton. Welcome to Wednesday, Carson City. Cyclists and pedestrians are invited to join the Ride (and Walk) of Silence this evening. It’s meant to bring awareness to safety issues faced by everyone sharing the road. The Historical Society of Dayton Valley continues their lecture series with a presentation by Laura Tennant. Today, you can get certified to use their laser cutter and engraver in the new Maker Space, or you can get a dose of some international flavor. Their Diversity in Action program features Peruvian and Latin American Folkloric music, and is suitable for all ages.

Save your gas money and head to the Carson City Library for a presentation on our beautiful lake and the diverse ecosystem that makes it special. Lending a hand to the Boys and Girls Club can be as easy as lunch or dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings; their annual Team Up for Kids Community Day raises funds for our local organization. Put some swing in that thing during Jazz Night at Living the Good Life, just get there in time for their delicious dinner menu.

For the last several months, the Galaxy Theater has been playing a movie from yesteryear on Sundays and Wednesdays. This week’s ‘Flashback’ is the disco classic ‘Saturday Night Fever,’ in all its polyester glory. For those interested in a nursing career, Western Nevada College is hosting an informational meeting that will cover what can be expected for those enrolling in the educational program. Now that spring is more or less here, Carson City BMX is back on the track. You’ll find their races on Sunday mornings, but Wednesdays are for practice.

The annual Father-Daughter Ball at Carson High School is just days away. Tickets have been flying off the proverbial shelf, and you aren’t going to want to miss out. It’s just unfortunate timing that today has been designated ‘Nevada Moves Day.’ With the heavy rain, it may not be the best time to try your hand at walking or biking to school. A break in the storm this afternoon will make for an easier trek home, but you can always take up the challenge after Spring break next week. The annual Father-Daughter Dance at Carson High is fast approaching, and today is your last chance for in-person ticket sales. Head to the Carson High office between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. if you’ve got cash in hand.

March 14, or 3.14, is jokingly referred to as ‘Pi Day’ because of its resemblance to the mathematical constant. The Tahoe Mountain Milers host a fun run every year to celebrate. If you can run 3.14 miles in a time closest to 31.4 minutes, the bragging rights, and a delicious pie, will be yours. Spaghetti is on the menu at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion where the Nurses of Western Nevada College are hosting a fundraiser.

Eagle Valley Middle School has an award-winning LEGO robotics team, and that extra-curricular falls firmly within the category of ‘STEAM.’ Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math in education is the focus of tonight’s ‘STEAM’ Night, chock-full of demonstrations, activities, experiments, and the aforementioned robots. Carson High’s more musically-inclined students can be found on the stage tonight at the Carson City Community Center for a Musical Theater and Choral Showcase. The Historical Society of Dayton Valley is thrilled to bring an update about their efforts to restore the 1881 Carson and Colorado Railroad Depot. Wired Wednesday is a group of film-makers, photographers, and digital artists that is responsible for the great short film contests throughout the year. They always welcome anyone interested to join their ranks.

Today is traditionally a day to celebrate sweethearts, but there are those who eschew the trappings of what they consider a ‘Hallmark holiday.’ However you choose to spend the day, you’ll find some options here. Show some love to local non-profit ‘Food for Thought’ by grabbing a yummy beverage at Dutch Brothers coffee today. Battle Born Social is hosting a Un-Valentine's Roaring 20s Party and hoping to see some zoot suits and flapper dresses while they serve era-inspired cocktails and appetizers.

You won’t find this Wednesday lacking when it comes to stuff to do, explore, and enjoy. The annual Carson High Talent Show always delights and thoroughly entertains the audience. Comma Coffee is hosting a reception for their newest display, the ‘Break These Chains Live Free’ Art Exhibit, featuring the winning pieces from a high school contest designed to bring awareness to human trafficking. A cute new shop downtown, Rustically Divine, celebrates it’s Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting.

Many a romantic tune has been written about the moon: Blue Moon, Dancin’ in the Moonlight, Fly Me to the Moon. Channel the rare blood blue moon eclipse into something creative and enter the ‘Tell Me You Love Me’ Short Film Competition that begins today. Get a beautiful view of the full moon in picturesque Washoe Valley during a guided hike at the state park, just make sure to reserve your spot first. Something sweet is in store today at Baskin Robbins; they are celebrating ‘31’ with $1.50 scoops all day, and with the spring-like weather, ice cream might not be a bad idea.

Here we are, toward the end of January, with practically no snow to speak of; but, if all indications are correct, we will have some winter weather blowing in by day’s end. Warm up with some hot jazz at Living the Good Life. It’s always a party when the boys of J and M Productions host karaoke night at Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge.

I hope everyone is enjoying these last few days of 2017. While the Carson City Library is getting a much-needed refresh, you'll find limited services at the Adams Hub on Proctor. Get your fill of twinkling holiday lights while you can, the displays at Carson Valley Inn and at Nevada Christmas only run through Friday night.

On a morning like this, I realize that I need to ask Santa for some windshield wipers. Stay safe out there, Carson City, the roads are wet. The Carson Library is usually a great place to retreat on days like this, but you’ll find their doors closed for the next few weeks: time for a makeover. If you’d like to check out a book or use the wireless internet, you’ll find a ‘pop-up’ library in the Community Center this week, and in the Adams Hub on Proctor Street next week.

Saturday, in addition to Carson City’s monthly downtown wine walk and the annual Holiday with a Hero Crawl, Minden holds its annual Christmas Parade.

Ready for the long weekend filled with friends, family, and food? Get in the celebratory spirit with some live jazz at Living the Good Life or country dancing at Carson Lanes.
