May day has come and gone, but just barely. This is my favorite time of year in Carson City: blooming flowers, warmer days, and the return of summertime activities. The Historic Carson Scavenger Hunt begins today, so head downtown and look for the unique features that make the buildings one of a kind. Mondays are perfect for getting out and starting the week off with some swing dancing with our local club, the High Sierra Swing Dancers. Firkin and Fox is a great place for food and drink, but tonight you can go and sing some songs with karaoke leaders J and M Productions.

This August, two 2016 CHS graduates, and a student who finished her sophomore year, will begin another year of high school in a new country, learning a new language, and living with a different family.

Seniors MacKenzie Gilliam and Delaney Fine, and sophomore Alexa Conrad, were chosen for the Rotary exchange program. Gilliam will be going to Italy, Fine to Belgium and Conrad to Leon, France.

The Brewery Arts Center (BAC) in downtown Carson City will be hosting a free summer concert series this year, sponsored by the Mortimer and Mimi Levitt Foundation.

Through the efforts of the BAC, Carson City was one of 15 cities nationwide awarded the concert series for 2016.

The Levitt AMP Carson City Music Series kicks off June 4 and will run every Saturday evening through August 6 with live music starting at 7 p.m. along Minnesota Street next to the BAC. The 10-week music series will include one Friday night show on June 17.

The concert series is free and open to the public.

The changing of the monthly guard is happening. The first of May is Sunday and Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Music, theater, sports, shopping and more will be abundant in the valley this weekend, so make sure to take a good look at this weekend’s list for all of your fun options.

As the curtain rises on a stage full of tap-dancing feet this May, audiences will applaud one of the grandest, most intense celebrations of musical theater released on Broadway.

It is the quintessential song-and-dance spectacular, 42nd Street. The award-winning Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company presents the musical at the Carson City Community Center, weekends, May 6 through 15.

The weekend has arrived, and it is packed with things to do. Pull on your cowboy boots and head out to the Cowboy Festival in Genoa. Head out to the ballfield: the WNC Wildcats softball and baseball teams are playing at home today and tomorrow. It’s the final weekend of the Proscenium Players production of Harvey; get ready for a great show. A blockbuster gathering of 90 major sports and entertainment stars — including Charles Barkley, Justin Timberlake and five NFL starting quarterbacks — have signed on for the 27th annual American Century Championship, July 19–24 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. The 54-hole tournament will be televised live on NBC Sports and NBCSN.

Ready for a great day, Carson City? It’s a day of beginnings all over the place. The new Italian restaurant, Angelina’s, inside the Carson Nugget is celebrating its Grand Opening all weekend. The annual Cowboy Festival in Genoa begins this afternoon and includes music, demonstrations, art exhibits, and more. Join the United Federal Credit Union for their ribbon cutting this afternoon, and enjoy live music and BBQ. Today is ‘Dining Out for Life,’ so head to Peg’s Glorified Ham and Eggs, Sassafras, or Adele’s to help raise funds for Northern Nevada Hopes.

The tiny little town of Silver City on the way to Virginia City has an amazing arts community: resident artist Scott MacLeod has his final sculpture workshop this afternoon: the found object ship he’s building is incredible. Dance yourself through the evening with Country Line Dance at Carson Lanes, or if you prefer a big band sound, a beginning lesson in swing dance is at El Charro Avita. Get a good view of our valley from the Kings Canyon Trail with today’s Parks and Rec Easy Walk. The Clear Creek Bowman have started up Tuesday Night Archery for the season, so head out to the range and let a few arrows fly.

Unfortunately, it could make for soggy feet if you’ve got any outdoor activities planned. Lucky for us, plenty of fun can be found indoors. Hit the Carson Mall for Cowgirls and Lipstick or learn about rare coins at the Nevada State Museum. Meet author Joe Crowley at Browsers' Corner Book Store or read to therapy dogs at the Carson City Library. Today has a lot going for it. Food Truck Friday is the theme of the new United Federal Credit Union’s Grand Opening week: you can find them across the street from Mill’s Park on Williams St. Earth Day weekend kicks off at Western Nevada College with a Gem and Mineral Sale during the day, followed by a presentation by World Renowned Scientist: Dr. Charles Goldman in Marlette Hall at 7 p.m. Break a leg to the cast of ‘Harvey.’ The Procenium Players open their two weekend run at the Brewery Arts Center’s Black Box Theater tonight.

The final event of the Senior Project happens April 18 and Carson High School reserves the entire school day to these momentous, rigorous, relevant, and result driven speeches. The excitement at CHS is intense as these seniors dress for the occasion, dawning everything from professional business attire to scrubs depending on the nature of their projects. Though college and career are just around the corner, a feeling of anticipation, excitement, and soon-to-be graduation flows through the air at CHS.

After that cold snap earlier this week, it’s time to go enjoy the sunshine. Spend the afternoon cheering on the WNC Wildcats as they take on Salt Lake Community College. You’ll find the softball double-header at Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds; baseball is played at the Harvey Field at Western Nevada College. Happy Anniversary, Mile High Jazz Band. Every second Tuesday they play a concert at Comma Coffee, and have for fifteen years. Help them celebrate. Grab your dancing shoes and head to Carson Lanes and learn some country line dancing. Kids won’t want to miss Craft Day at the Carson City Library: all supplies are free and waiting. It’s an evening of illusion at the Brewery Arts Center. Be dazzled and help raise funds for the Carson Middle School Band Program.

Hello, Carson City. Don’t let the fact that it’s Monday get you down, there are still fun ways to kick off the work week. The Firkin and Fox hosts karaoke tonight; just remember to use the east or south entrances while construction continues on their new patio. Go searching for ghosts at the Gold Hill Hotel. What a wonderful community we live in. Music, theater, hiking, biking, wining, dining, walking, TED-talking, animal loving, state governing, and so much more are available in our valley. The days are getting longer and there is so much in store for us in the coming weeks and months as we journey into summer. Take a good gander at my list of what’s going on in the Carson City area.
