Broadway Classic ‘42nd Street' plays weekends May 6-15 in Carson City
As the curtain rises on a stage full of tap-dancing feet this May, audiences will applaud one of the grandest, most intense celebrations of musical theater released on Broadway.
It is the quintessential song-and-dance spectacular, 42nd Street. The award-winning Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company presents the musical at the Carson City Community Center, weekends, May 6 through 15.
Originally a Warner Brothers film, the musical was totally reworked to become a Tony Award-winning Broadway spectacular, with back-to-back explosive production numbers that mix elegance, comedy and extraordinary tap dancing .
This is the story of Peggy Sawyer, a sweet, fresh, unknown in the dance troupe who becomes an overnight star, animated with some of Broadway’s greatest hits, including “Lullaby of Broadway,” “We’re In The Money,” “Shuffle Off To Buffalo” and, of course, “42nd Street.”
A critic from the Chicago Tribune commented, “42nd Street is one of the great and timeless anthems of the indispensable art form known as American musical theater. An emotional, romantic show.”
Playing Peggy Sawyer in the WNMTC production is Amanda Marvel. Peggy steps in to replace veteran actress, Dorothy Brock (Catherine Cook). Her talent and sincerity win the heart of director Julian Marsh (Matt Wilkerson), while she is wooed by her leading man, Billy Flynn (Bryce Hartley). Dorothy is courted by her sugar daddy, Abner Dillon (Dan Shoup) while still in love with her old vaudeville flame, Pat Denning (Jim DeZerga.)
The show is produced and directed by Stephanie Arrigotti, choreographed by Gina Kaskie Davis, and accompanied by a professional orchestra, conducted by Kevin Murphy. This team recently presented Mary Poppins at the Carson City Community Center to 6,550 people from 18 states.
Showtimes for this family-friendly show are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 and Sundays at 2:00 with an additional matinee on Saturday, May 14 at 2:00. Tickets ($28/$25) are available at wnmtc.com or by calling 866-977-6849.
