Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space in cooperation with Carson City Senior Center present the Rockin’ 50’s Family Dance! Five years ago, our community suffered a great shock when four people, including three National Guardsmen, were the victims of a shooting attack at IHOP. The annual remembrance run begins at 7 a.m., so please be cautious when driving along Fairview this morning.

The long weekend lets us hold onto summer a little bit longer. Enjoy an interfaith community picnic on the lawn at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Bring something to share, your plates and utensils, and something for the F.I.S.H. food drive. Watch out for playa dust. Where has the time gone? We are moments away from Labor Day weekend with its Best of the West Rib Cook-off, monthly Downtown Wine Walk, Fallon Cantaloupe Festival, and Virginia City’s Civil War Days. Enjoy a walk in the Ronald D. Wilson Memorial Park, just west of Emerson Drive. Canyon White, the award-winning singer-songwriter, can be found at her weekly gig at Living the Good Life joined by Keith Alan Barnett. Dance it up: swing at El Charro, country line dance at Carson Lanes, or square dancing in Genoa are on the table.

Welcome back, Wildcats. Western Nevada College kicks off a week of festivities at today with some free donuts and pizza. Those not headed back to school might be headed back to the Playa: Burning Man has begun, so keep your eyes peeled for some crazy looking cars on the road. A new exhibit featuring local high school artists can be found downtown in the Community Development building next to City Hall.

The kids deserve some fun for surviving their first week back at school, and Carson City delivers. The first annual Northern Nevada Family Fun Day takes over Mills Park with music, a kids zone, activities, food, raffles, and much more. High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents its monthly dance party Saturday, August 27 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Black Box Theather, 449 W. King St., Carson City. At 6:30 p.m.

Angie Bryan will teach a lesson in intermediate West Coast Swing. Social dance is 7:30-10 p.m. Partners are not required. Lesson $7 for HSSDC and any swing dance club members or $10 for nonmembers; dance $7 for members of swing clubs and $10 for nonmembers.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — The "Silver Pavilion" Inaugura- Palooza concert on August 20th was a big success with at least 150 folks from near and far in attendance during the 6 hour event. The festival style public event was held to celebrate the much anticipated addition of a new outdoor stage to the region's arts and music scene.

Time to hit the books, Carson City, the new school year begins today. Keep an eye out for kids on bikes and in crosswalks all over town, and please drive safely. Mondays are usually quiet in our valley, but you’ll find the High Sierra Swing Dance Club jazzing it up at El Charro Avita. The 13th Annual Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival, sponsored by the Mile High Jazz Band Association, continued Friday night with performances in downtown Carson City.

The United States Air Force Band of the Golden West has returned and will be at the Community Center tonight, if you were quick enough to grab free tickets from the Chamber of Commerce. Join the ladies of Muscle Powered for a mountain bike ride through beautiful Ash Canyon. Hear the stories and legends of the Washoe People in their native language with translations into English at the Carson Valley Cultural Center. Continue on for even more to do.

Carson kids have one last week to lay about, while their neighbors in Douglas and Lyon County are headed back to school. Jazz and Beyond continues with some fun times downtown. Me and Bobby McGee will appear in the Comma Courtyard, followed by the Rosebud Dance Band in the McFadden Plaza.
