Can you believe it? It’s the last weekend of July and the kids will be headed back to school in no time. Don’t be dismayed though, plenty of summer fun can still be found. Sign the kids up for the Capital City Kids’ Triathlon at the Carson Aquatic Center. Head out to Mills Park for a few laps on the train or a picnic. Don’t miss out on making a bowl for the Empty Bowls project at the Farmers Market; or let the kids run off to the bounce house while you make a bowl yourself.

Happy birthday, America! Today we celebrate our independence, and what better way than with a carnival. You might as well stay at Mills Park all day, the fireworks display starts when it gets dark. Tune into Magic 95.5FM and you’ll hear the choreographed music to go along with the oohs and aaahs. Where ever you choose to watch fireworks, please be safe. There are thousands of visitors in the Northern Nevada area this weekend, and law enforcement will be out in full force.

Over the next few days you will be inundated with options: where to go, what to see. Fourth of July weekend in Northern Nevada is a great time. The inaugural Battle Born 1864 Brews, Bikes and Bubbly Nevada Day Fundraiser and 12th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge is underway now in downtown Carson City.
Among the motor patrol officers competing from around the region through courses along downtown Carson City streets, there's also classic cars, many local craft brewers and wineries, beer and wine tasting, vendors, food and contests.

Classic car enthusiasts can get a head start into this weekend's festivities with a Cruise Night tonight at Wyndham Gardens Carson Station, 5 to 8 p.m. at 900 S. Carson Street Carson City.

Hosted by Silver Dollar Car Classic, cruises are held every Thursday night through summer at various locations around Carson City.

Classic cars, motor bikes, beer judging, tattoo and pin-up contests, food, live music and array of family-friendly activities will fill downtown Carson City and Fuji Park this weekend for three events: The Battle Born 1864 Brews, Bikes and Bubbly fundraiser, the 12th annual Carson City Sheriff's Office Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge and the 31st Run What-Cha-Brung car show.

This Friday and Saturday the Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host its 12th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge. During this event Carson Street from Robinson to Musser will be closed as motor officers train with one another on a Peace Officer Standards in Training approved course.

A week before the Carson City Airport Open House, aviation enthusiasts can get a thrill of the vintage aircraft variety this weekend aboard the "Tin Goose." The airplane will soar Saturday and Sunday over the capital city, taking community members on rides both days.

Megastar and multi-talented artist Justin Timberlake will join superstar athletes and entertainers for the first time this summer at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe. The much-decorated performer is an avid golfer who plays to a six handicap and is renowned in the sport for his philanthropic endeavors.

With hopes of generating enthusiasm among young people and using themes of robotics, aviation and aerospace to do it, Carson City Airport's annual open house returns to the skies above the capital city on Saturday, June 20, after a year hiatus.

More than 6,000 visitors attended the event in 2013. This year’s open house, which runs from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., is free to the public. Activities will feature interactive displays, flybys, plane and helicopter demonstrations, robotics demonstrations, food and beverages, bounce house and many more family activities.

Carson City is getting a new Optimist club beginning in June. Nevada Staffing owners are chartering a new club that "brings out the best in Kids" with programs such as Internet safety, Respect for law, Oratorical contests, Junior golf program, childhood cancer campaign, service to families in need, and scholarship programs. There’s one place where NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB rivalries meet annually to settle old scores. The venue: Lake Tahoe. The event: The American Century Championship. At stake: a share in the $625,000 prize purse. The scene: Six days of fist bumps, high fives, autograph signing, photos with fans, laughs galore and some great golf.

A blockbuster lineup of sports legends, all-stars, Olympians and hall of famers plus Hollywood celebrities of film and television will go tee to green July 14-19 at the 26th American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club.

After 12 years, the annual Carson City Sheriff's Office Cops and Kids open house Saturday was among the biggest yet, with dozens of families and hundreds of children taking part in games, contests and information events well into the late morning and into the afternoon.

The popular community event is aimed at children of all ages and their families as a way introduce public safety agencies, especially law enforcement, to them. The event is part family carnival without the rides, and part educational experience, where music, food, contests, songs and dancing are the orders of the day.

Nevada’s top community college and high school students in Career and Technical Education will compete Thursday at Western Nevada College in the welding and automotive mechanics divisions of the SkillsUSA state competition.

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. Agencies and organizations have teamed to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state and encourage both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

Vendor spaces are filling up fast for this year's Battle Born Brews, Bikes, and Bubbly, in conjunction with the Extreme Motor Officer Challenge, held in Historic Downtown Carson City Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27.

Booths are 10’x10’ spaces (unless otherwise agreed upon) and the exact location will be available at check-in. Exhibitors must remain in their assigned area and occupy their booths during open hours of the event: Friday check-in at 10 a.m., event goes from 12 p.m. until 11 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. until 9 p.m.

The Charity Golf Tournament of the Spring is almost here. The second Kilroy Klassic Holes for Heroes fundraising tournament for Honor Flight Nevada will be on Saturday, April 25, 2015 with an 8:30am shotgun start at Silver Oak Golf Center in Carson City.

The tournament is an adjusted handicap 4 person scramble format that offers fun for golfers of any skill level.

The Western Nevada College baseball team made a statement Friday afternoon when it grabbed three games from Scenic West Athletic Conference rival Salt Lake Community College at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

The initial contest was unfinished business from Thursday’s game that was stopped after 12 innings due to darkness, leaving the teams in a 3-3 tie. WNC captured that win in short order on Friday.

Salt Lake pitcher Chris Bradford opened the 13th inning by striking out two Wildcat batters. Then, Taylor Snyder singled to center field for the Bruins, but was unable to score.

The voting deadline has ended for a USA Today contest where Carson City is among several vying for "best travel worthy state capital." As of Monday morning before the contest closed, Carson City had been leading in the reader poll.

The announcement will be made 9 a.m. Wednesday morning here. Along with bragging rights, the result of a win would provide a nice shot in the arm for local tourism.

MY PERSONAL LETTER TO ALL NEVADA REPUBLICAN ASSEMBLYMEN:It is time to put your priorities, perspectives and pride in order and remember who you work for.Election to the State Legislature is an honor. Many of you had to endure difficult Primary races, followed by difficult General election contests. In the end you prevailed. In the end, Republicans prevailed. Nevada Republicans as a whole prevailed to a degree never seen in our lifetimes.

After winning more than 60 wildlife stamp art contests, including this year’s Nevada Duck Stamp Art Contest, most people would probably start getting a little cocky. But artist Jeffrey Klinefelter isn’t like most people. No matter how many wins Klinefelter gets, he never takes anything for granted.

“I’m very surprised,” he said. “There are a lot of talented artists out there and winning one of these contests is really hard to do.”

The first round of high school tennis regionals in the North began Tuesday. The contests included all of the seeded teams (1-16) who squared off against all of the unseeded in teams at Bishop Manogue's brand new $808,000 nine-court complex. The new facility was state of the art and very classy, but what else would you expect from a school like Bishop Mangoue?

Virginia City will once again be overrun by zombies when Redrun II: A Zombie Sequel returns Oct. 11. Six miles through some of the Comstock Lode's most haunted history, six obstacle complete with zombies and insanity, and six safe zones/ revive stations along the revised course will make this annual race even more ghoulish.

The race begins at 1pm, however you must check-in at least one hour prior.
The after party AKA Zombie Manifestival will begin at 5pm.

Nevada's steam driven Sesquicentennial celebration culminates in Carson City with the Saturday, Nov. 1 Nevada Day Parade. This year’s parade theme, “Happy 150th Birthday, Nevada” encourages Silver State revelers to salute Nevada’s Oct. 31 1864 admission to the union as the 36th state.

Many celebrations are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of September. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Sept. 15 through 30.

Visitors and locals alike will find a variety of activities to enjoy in South Lake Tahoe Sunday, culminating with the Annual Labor Day Fireworks show.

The show features a simultaneous music broadcast that can be heard on local stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL - AM 1490. Show begins at 8:30 p.m. The fireworks are visible from all over town.
