WNC Baseball: Wildcats show will to win in three-game home series
The Western Nevada College baseball team made a statement Friday afternoon when it grabbed three games from Scenic West Athletic Conference rival Salt Lake Community College at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.
The initial contest was unfinished business from Thursday’s game that was stopped after 12 innings due to darkness, leaving the teams in a 3-3 tie. WNC captured that win in short order on Friday.
Salt Lake pitcher Chris Bradford opened the 13th inning by striking out two Wildcat batters. Then, Taylor Snyder singled to center field for the Bruins, but was unable to score.
However, in the bottom of the inning, WNC catcher Tim Lichty drilled the ball over right-center field to win the game. In the next four hours of baseball, the Wildcats won two seven-inning contests, 2-0 and 8-6.
In the first, WNC scored off of singles by Corey Pool and DJ Peters. In the fourth inning. Jake Bennett scored after being walked, and then advanced via Peter’s line drive to left field.
In the second contest, WNC loaded the bases to allow DJ Peters a two-run double.
Coach DJ Whittemore said Wildcats pitcher Kody Reynolds “was as hot as a guy can be,” throughout the day. “They beat a really good team.” Whittemore said that Salt Lake deserves credit for battling back all day long. But, he added, “These Wildcats don’t quit.”
The series finale begins at noon Saturday.
