Six of 9 survive first round in tennis regionals
The first round of high school tennis regionals in the North began Tuesday. The contests included all of the seeded teams (1-16) who squared off against all of the unseeded in teams at Bishop Manogue's brand new $808,000 nine-court complex. The new facility was state of the art and very classy, but what else would you expect from a school like Bishop Mangoue?
Carson High School sent nine athletes to represent their school on the tennis court. In the singles aspect there was: Jake Jones, Tyler Warren and Taylor Saaram. They all performed very well, especially Jones and Saaram. Jones took care of his business very efficiently and won 6-1, 6-2 in the best two out of three sets. Saaram did would do the exact same thing winning 6-1, 6-2 in straight sets as well. The only one on the singles side of things to drop a set was Warren, who ended up dropping two of them in his loss at 6-1, 1-6, 0-6.
The doubles side of things would tell a very similar story with Kunz and Woodbury, Sollberger and Hearn; Artz and Salm. Kunz and Woodbury, with the highest seed of any Carson team at 4, won their match in straight sets at 6-1, 6-2. Sollberger and Hearn got it done winning 6-2, 6-1 and Artz and Salm would end up losing to the number ten seed at 3-6, 4-6.
The second and third round of action takes place this Friday, Oct. 17 at the Caughlin Athletic Club with the first singles matches coming under way at 9 a.m. and the first doubles match up at 10:30 a.m. It will be very interesting to see if any Carson players will make it to Saturday where they would only have to win one of the two matches they play in order to advance to state. Nobody has made it to state in over nine years from the Carson boys team, so that in itself would be quite the accomplishment.
