The annual Holiday Craft Fair at Carson High features a plethora of handmade and locally crafted gifts for the loved ones on your shopping list. Take the plunge at the Carson Aquatic Center if you want to get a picture with Scuba Santa. Grab a coat, some friends, and your ID and head downtown for this month’s beer crawl. $15 gets you a glass and your first beer, from there you’ll pay only $1 for refills at several watering holes. There’s even more to enjoy this weekend, so keep reading for your options.

This volume is the third of a “Weird” trilogy about Virginia City. It is Sandie and Arline’s seventh collaborated book, and La Nae’s sixteenth book in print.

I made the decision to put all of the parade related events into a separate list for a few reasons: one, this list would be way too long otherwise; two, Halloween fun is plentiful all weekend long; and three, I want my list to be as easy to read as possible. The Battle Born state celebrates its admission to the United States on the last Friday of October, with the annual Nevada Day parade on Saturday. New this year is a ‘Passport to Downtown’ event on Friday. Also new this year is the one-night-only curated art show, Capital Collage, on Friday night featuring over 20 diverse artists and organizations.
History on the Comstock: In search of Bad Water Bill

Born Arnold Fryk in Wisconsin in 1912, Fryk headed west at an early age and found work in Hollywood as a stunt man and horse wrangler. He later worked at Death Valley, Calif., where dressed as a prospector, people would often pay to have their picture taken with him.
It was here at Bad Water Basin in Death Valley that Fryk became Bad Water Bill, a moniker that stayed with him for the rest of his life.

If you’ve got more apples than you know what to do with, the Greenhouse Garden Center has a cider press available today. Play BINGO for a good cause at the Carson City Senior Center, and don’t forget your costume. Carson City Symphony Association begins their 34th Season today with a concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater; as always, those under 18 get free admission.

Her latest artwork will be showcased in an exhibition on the 4th Floor Gallery of nearby St. Mary’s Art Center, 55 North R Street, Virginia City, from Oct. 14 through Oct. 21. The public is invited to the catered opening reception on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Children everywhere can spend the day with their friend, Thomas, when the No. 1 Engine pulls into the Virginia and Truckee Railroad station in Virginia City for two weekends next month: Oct. 20-22 and Oct. 27-29.

This list of happenings in the Carson City area isn’t getting any shorter. The annual Genoa Candy Dance is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, and this weekend welcomes the first ever Silver State Arts Festival at Fuji Park, as well. The first ever Community Garage Sale at the Community Center offers one-stop bargain hunting. Swing into the season at the monthly dance party hosted by the High Sierra Swing Dance Club.

There’s only a chance of rain, but the chance of it showing up at the wrong time is always high. The very early morning is best spent watching the hot air balloons against the Reno skyline, but you’ll probably want a sweater for the pre-dawn chill. Head up the hill to Virginia City this weekend. Nevada Groups Bring Science, Engineering, Arts and More to Silver City Summer Program

Each year since 2003, Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey (HCC) has co-sponsored some of the free, public programming in STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math - that the historic Comstock community offers annually in partnership with nearly a dozen groups and lots of community volunteers.

The Best in the West Rib Cook-off offers up family fun, live music, and plenty of bar-be-qued delights all the way through Monday. For those with younger kids, consider a day at Mills Park. This is the last weekend for summertime train rides through the cottonwoods. Join Muscle Powered at Silver Saddle Ranch by the Carson River for a bike or hike this morning. Bring water and a camera, you never know what wildlife will make an appearance.
