Carson City's Empire Elementary awarded $5K Rotary grant for STEM Parent Nights

The Carson City School District, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Carson City, is pleased to announce Empire Elementary School as the winner of a $5,000 grant to hold four Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, Parent Nights at their school. Nearly a dozen applications from teachers and teams of teachers were received for this competitive STEM grant.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the second annual Evening with Divas in Carson City, a Día de Muertos celebration at the Nevada State Museum, Nevada Artists Association’s 40th anniversary celebration, paranormal ghost investigations in Virginia City, a pie baking contest in Gardnerville and much more!

Governor presents Carson City teacher with $25,000 Milken Foundation award

Nietzsche wrote that "Without music, life would be a mistake." But thanks to band teacher Nicolas Jacques, that's a mistake no one is making at Carson Middle School in Carson City. Music is everywhere in the school, the district and the surrounding community as students throng to join Jacques’ concert band, marching band and jazz band ensembles.

Carson City school board agrees to offer $5.67 million for former church property

After months of meetings and negotiations with the property owners, trustees with the Carson City School District agreed Tuesday to move forward with the purchase of the former church property on 1600 Snyder Avenue.

Virginia company targeting Carson City area businesses in school sports scam

A Virginia company is contacting local businesses in Carson City asking for “sponsorships” for materials to benefit Carson High School. However, according to Carson City School District, this company has no real affiliation with the school nor the district.

CHS has many opportunities for students to become a part of something bigger than just themselves, not that making a name for oneself is a bad idea or anything, but it is up to the student to step on up, come on in, and check them out. There are so many clubs on campus; there are Interact Club meetings at lunch in CHS teacher Erin Been’s room every Thursday, and Been also advises the Represent Club.

Drone study aims to improve Carson City school zone bicycle, pedestrian safety

Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1, parents, families and teachers may see drones flying above and around their schools during morning student drop-off or afternoon pick-up. The Carson City School District is working with Carson City government officials to conduct a safety review study designed to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety in school zones.

New Coats Sought for Students in Transition in Carson City

This weekend will see the season’s first cold snap and dip below freezing temperatures. The McKinney-Vento Students in Transition Program in Carson City is seeking donations of new (not used) coats and jackets for students in transition. Students in Transition are those individuals who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence.

Along with libraries across the country, the Carson City Library will be celebrating Banned Books Week (Sept. 22-28) with a special event to thank authors whose work has been prohibited or challenged.

Between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, readers will gather at the library to write letters to authors to show support for writing about controversial subjects.

Senator Square: Time for the Happiest Carson High School Homecoming on Earth

Friday Sept. 13, no bad luck on this day, beginning at 1:18 p.m. was an assembly in the Big Gym during the last class of the day as an introduction to CHS’ Happiest Homecoming on Earth. Leadership students led the assembly with the first activity being the introduction of the Homecoming King and Queen candidates who made their grand entrance onto the floor.

Saliman and Robinson: Is this Carson City's worst intersection?

The intersection at Robinson and Saliman is, for the majority of the day, reasonable and quick to get through. However, in the thirty minutes before Carson High School classes begin, and the thirty minutes after school lets out, it is one of the most frustrating intersections in the capital city.

There are nine lanes of traffic that have to navigate the four-way stop signs at this intersection, plus the hundreds of students using all four crosswalks.

On Thursday afternoon, ten minutes prior to school letting out at 2 p.m. and ending at 2:20 p.m., I observed the following:

In support of the recommendations from the Federal Commission on School Safety's final report, the Carson City School District is pleased to announce the Nevada Department of Education has awarded $1.15 Million in grant funding for school safety.
