Carson City school board agrees to offer $5.67 million for former church property
After months of meetings and negotiations with the property owners, trustees with the Carson City School District agreed Tuesday to move forward with the purchase of the former church property on 1600 Snyder Avenue.
The board gave the district approval to spend $5.67 million for the property, which sits on 10.2 acres, has five buildings, that totals 41,000 square feet.
While the vote on Tuesday night means the district can move forward with a purchase agreement document to provide to the seller, the seller of the property will have to agree with the district offer. The seller had requested an offer of $5.67 million.
According to Carson City School District spokesman Dan Davis, the motion passed with a 4 to 2 vote, noting board members Richard Varner and Mike Walker objecting to the purchase. School board member Lupe Ramirez was absent from the meeting. The quorum was maintained and the majority vote passed the item.
The facility was formerly Capital Christian Church, which had closed nearly a year prior to the negotiations for the property.
Since September, the district organized a citizens committee which met every Wednesday through the month. The committee provided feedback as to their suggestions for how the district may use the property. However, there has been no determination yet as to what the property will become.
