A plethora of rides, games and prizes filled Mills Park in Carson City on Friday during the annual RSVP July 4 Celebration and Carnival.

Heading into the Independence Day holiday weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region to keep the next three days jam-packed with excitement.

The Fourth of July in Carson City is something special, full of festive cheer, fun and excitement.

From train rides to a carnival midway, Independence Day in the Nevada state capital is about more than fireworks.

Pyrotechs will be plying their craft tonight at Mills Park around 9:30 p.m. Please keep pets indoors and leave the fireworks to authorized professionals.

The Fourth of July will be colored with parades, barbecues, carnivals, concerts and plenty of fireworks around Carson City, Carson Valley, Lake Tahoe and Virginia City.

The Nevada State Museum in Carson City will be open with regular hours on the Fourth of July and has a busy month planned with a host of events revolving around the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The Nevada Railroad Museum is also open July 4 offering a parade of trains, rides and more.

The event lineup features the RSVP Spring Celebration and Carnival kickoff and family night at Mills Park, a Healthy Communities event in Silver Springs, CASA volunteer information hour workshop, an afternoon hike along the Ash Canyon trail, art demonstrations, live music and more. Abby Vawter, 6, was among the first in line to check out a new book when they were delivered by the Carson City Library to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

“Reading books is like my heart,” she said. “The more you read, the smarter you get. That’s what my teacher always told me.”

“It was really amazing,” Abby said. “I like the way she saves the day.”

For the past few years, the youth room at the club had a satellite library with about 60-70 books to serve 300-400 kids.

Celebrating more than three decades of rides, games and fun, 2019 marks the 34th year that Nevada Rural Counties RSVP will host its Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park in Carson City, May 9-12.

Just because Nevada Day and the parade are over doesn't mean there isn't anything to do around Carson City on Sunday. Take advantage of the last of a three-day weekend, relax or have some more fun.
