Our local game shop, Hydra’s Lair, invites you to movie night. If Star Wars III isn’t your style, then” our worst fears have been realized. We must move quickly if the Jedi Order is to survive.”

It’s a wine walking, Super Bowl weekend. You’ll find music and art on this list, but also a list of sports books and football parties. Fun for kids, adults, families, and friends awaits you in the area: it just depends on what you are in the mood for. Keep reading and have a great weekend!

Carson City history is fascinating, and there’s so much of it. But, much of it is gone and so much is untold. That is, until now.

A significant part of this city’s history is finally being told by Bonnie Boice Nishikawa, new historian/author, who has just published a chronicle of her experiences growing up in the Nevada State Orphans/Children’s Home or “Sunny Acres”, once very much a part of the downtown history between 1870-1992.

I hope you got your fill of naps last weekend because this weekend is chock full of fun to be had for all. You can Wine Walk until you Holiday Crawl downtown. Take your pick of craft shows in town. Kids won’t want to miss the Santa Train at the State Railroad Museum or one of the two performances of ‘The Peanutcracker’ at the Community Center. Whether you’d like to spend the days indoors or out, there is something for all ages in the Carson City area this weekend.

• Nevada Artists Association Art Exhibit at the Carson Visitor Center (8am-6pm)

Local author, Patti Higdon Santos, will be signing copies of her new book for children entitled "Ruby, the Red-Footed Booby" this Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Living the Good Life in Carson City.

This is the second in her series of books about the Blue and Red-Footed Boobies of the Galapagos Islands. There will be a reading at 4:30 p.m.

Texie Susan Gregory Launches Meet and Greet Book Signing Tour in Reno, NevadaAuthor Texie Susan Gregory returns to Northern Nevada to hold a meet and greet, and book signing event on November 5th, 2016. The event will be held at Barnes & Nobel Booksellers, 5555 S Virginia Street, Reno, Nevada, from 1:00 pm till 3:00 pm. The event will highlight Gregory’s debut novel, Slender Reeds: Jochebed’s Hope.

All of us at Catmandu Sanctuary and Adoption Center would like to give a shout-out to Jeffery Pace at “Artsy Fartsy” gallery for his support of Catmandu. Monday has returned, but it is bringing football with it. A double dose of grid-iron action is on the way. Karaoke has returned to the Firkin and Fox for those who don’t have a pigskin addiction. Poet Glade A. Myler will be at the Browser’s Corner Book Store for a meet and greet and book signing. Shake off the Monday blues with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; their night out at El Charro Avita kicks off at 6pm.

This is the first Labor Day I didn’t force myself to work. After the Temple Burn at Burning Man, I decided I needed to dedicate a little time today to a different kind of work. That work was emotional in nature.

See, the Temple Burn on the Playa is a somber moment. It’s a time of reflection, letting go, and grief. The purpose is to release pain, bad habits, and what no longer serves.

This weekend, I volunteered my time at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Donned in fur and boots, I gave hugs and greeted Burners flying into Reno for Burning Man. I also imparted valuable information. I shared how to get supplies, travel to Black Rock Desert, and enjoy the festival.

Frances Humphrey Lecture Series continues June 23 with a presentation of the book "Best Backpacking Trips in Nevada and California." The presentation is by author Mike White and will be held at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Hold onto your hats, Carson City, summer has arrived with a bang. Bikes, brews, bulls and broncs are just a few of the things you’ll find on this event summary. Whether you are looking for adult fun, family fun, art, music, shopping, or something outdoorsy, look no further: Carson City and her neighboring valleys are packed full of fun.

• Reno-Tahoe Odyssey (178 mile relay race; begins at Wingfield Park in downtown Reno; legs 24-28 run through Carson City)

Downtown is the place to be Saturday with over twelve hours jam packed full of fun. The Third and Curry Farmers Market begins at 8:30 a.m. From there head north on Curry to the Spring Vintage Faire at Due Sorella. Stick around for the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk at 1 p.m. The Rotary Club brings you the Capital City Brewfest at 3 p.m. Family friendly fun hits the outdoor stage at the Brewery Arts Center: Mumbo Gumbo will have you dancing in the street.

I am not even going to attempt guessing what weather we have in store. The west side of the Sierras are notoriously unpredictable. You are much better off betting on the Kentucky Derby; and the Firkin and Fox is just the place to cheer on your favorite horse.

Luck and politics play into Las Vegas author Michael Green’s analysis of Nevada history from the earliest explorers to mining, tourism and economic diversification in a talk and book signing Thursday, April 28, at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City.

On a sun dappled porch, Julie Grady of Due Sorella, a local home décor store, poured coffee and served scones to guests gathered to discuss the store’s 10th anniversary party from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, featuring food, live music and door prizes.

Carson City’s most impassioned TEDx enthusiasts will come together on Friday for a day of information, inspiration, networking and dialogue around the theme Creating the community you want to live in.

The event will take place at Brewery Arts Center’s Black Box Theater and will feature an incredible line-up of speakers on topics ranging from innovations and ideas to health to technology and the arts. Attendees will also have an opportunity to network at an on-site lunch event.

The Frances Humphrey Lecture Series this week features a presentation on the Bombing of Gernika and its impact upon the United States. The lecture is Thursday, Nov. 19, 6:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City. This lecture and book signing by Xabier Irujo will be enjoyed by anyone interested the history of modern warfare, Basque studies, and ethical and humanitarian issues related to the effects of war on society.

It’s root, root, root for the home team as the WNC Wildcats play a double header at Harvey Field.

Labor Day Weekend Highlights

Carson City:

• Treasure hunt on Saturday at the Carson City Historical Society Rummage and Yard Sale at the Forman-Roberts House Museum at 1207 N. Carson St. Free tours of the museum will also be available during the 9am-4pm event.
• Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum Friday through Monday.

Community Roots and The Dayton Farmers Market will host a book signing Thursday, August 13 during market hours of 3 – 6 pm with noted local authors Laura Tennant and Jack Folmar.

The authors’ new book, Images of America: Dayton is the first book written about the community in more than 50 years. The book traces the early days of Dayton, and captures the founding spirit of the community. Market goers can purchase a copy of the book and have it signed with all proceeds benefitting the Dayton Historical Society.

I apologize, Carson City. You have some decisions to make. There is quite a bit going on whether you want something family friendly, adults only, indoors, outdoors, or a combination of it all. The weekly Farmers Market at Third and Curry St. is always a good way to start the weekend. Yummy food, a bounce house for the kids, and beautiful flowers are hard to argue with. Keep reading for enough fun to make your head spin!

Summer fun looks like a wine walk, thanks to the Downtown Business Association. Saturday, August 1, the festivities begin at 1 p.m., rain or shine. You have until 5 p.m. to hit as many stops as possible before the raffle begins. Every first Saturday over thirty shops, restaurants, businesses, and organizations stock up on wine and goodies and throw open their doors to the crowds of merry-makers. It's always a great reason to explore downtown.

The wine walk runs from 1pm to 5pm. Sign up at the Carson Nugget, Cactus Jacks, Bella Fiore Wines, Carson Jewelry and Loan, Remedy's Bar, or Touched by Angels.
