Carson boys survive scare from Grizzlies, 43-41

The Carson High varsity boys basketball team remained unbeaten Friday night, surviving a scare from the host Galena Grizzlies whose second half surge provided for an exciting finish.

Carson broke out to an early lead, outscoring Galena 16-4 in the opening period.

The Senator defense held the hosts to seven points in the second quarter, maintaining an eight-point advantage, 19-11, at the half despite only scoring three points in those eight minutes before the break.

Senators run past Colts, 54-30, to clinch league title

With three games remaining on the regular season schedule, the Carson High boys clinched the league title Tuesday night at home by running past the visiting Wooster Colts, 54-30.

Their undefeated streak now stretches to 13-0 in the Sierra League. They are 11-5 overall.

Senators hold off Miners to stay unbeaten

The Carson High varsity boys basketball team held off a late rally by Bishop Manogue to win, 62-53, posting its tenth win of the season and remaining unbeaten in the Sierra League.

Carson trailed by one point at the end of the opening quarter. But the Senators rallied in the second period, outscoring the Miners 21-12 to take an eight-point halftime lead.

Manogue came out shooting well in the third quarter, cutting Carson’s lead to four, 34-30, before the Senators responded by widening their lead to 11 points toward the end of the period.

Carson rallies to top Galena, 60-54

Trailing by six points at the end of the third quarter, the Carson High Senators rallied in the final period to edge Sierra League rival Galena 60-54 Tuesday night at Carson High School.

The Senators opened the game with a 16-12 lead after one period. But the Grizzlies rallied to take a five-point, 27-22, lead at the half.

Galena maintained its lead through three quarters before Carson scored 21 points in the fourth period to snatch victory away from the visiting Grizzlies.

Carson High School sports medicine program provides more than just education

Caroline Gabica slid activated hand warmers into her boots, picked up a bag of footballs and followed the coach out onto the field during the playoff game between Carson and Reed high schools in November. Soon Gabica, manager for the Carson High School Senators football team, was back on the sidelines, taping up the injured fingers of a player who got tangled up with another player’s face mask.

The Carson Senators boys basketball team advance closer to the Sierra League title after Tuesday night's double overtime victory over Bishop Manogue at Bishop Manogue High School.
Cameron Price scored 18 points and Asa Carter added 15 as Carson improved to 12-3. Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said if his team beats Douglas on Friday, Carson will win the Sierra League.

Carson Boys Stop Miners Hot Streak

The Carson Senators handled the Miners of Bishop Manogue, notching a 45-38 victory Friday night.

The Miners came into the game looking very strong and most likely believed that the game wouldn't be nearly as competitive from start to finish as it was.

The first quarter of the match up featured a defensive first quarter from both squads, but the Senators managed to keep the lead going into the second quarter at 13-6.

Quarter two was when Manogue really began to dial down their shots and make the game significantly more competitive with a score of 20-18 Carson at the half.

High School Football Regional Championship: Reed 28, Carson 25

Saturday afternoon at Bishop Manogue High School the 2014 Northern Region football championship was underway. The Sierra League Champions were the Carson Senators and the High Desert Championships were the Reed Raiders and both are very good at the sport of football.

Carson Stomps Reno In Football

Friday night at Carson High School, one of two semi final games were played to decide who would advance to the Northern Regional Championships as the Carson Senators took on the Reno Huskies. The contest would be the last home football game at Carson High School for some months with the Regional Championship already set to take place at Manogue Saturday, Nov. 29.

Senator Square: Carson High senior Caden Lehman wins national rodeo event

Caden Lehman, a senior at Carson High School, an officer for the Capitol FFA program, and an officer in the Douglas-Carson High School Rodeo Club, recently had his biggest win doing what he loves. He is involved in Team Roping and Calf Roping and is a member of the American Cowboys Team Roping Association. 

Recently at the ACTRA National Finals in Reno at the Livestock Events Center, Caden won the Super 7 National Championship, landing him and his partner, Jack Curry of Gardnerville, each new Royal T 3-horse trailers, buckles, and $10,000 cash. 

Galena tops Carson girls soccer on Senior Night

The ladies of Carson High School took on those of Galena on the soccer pitch Tuesday at Carson High School. The night held something more of importance for the seniors of Carson than just a soccer game.

Here Ye, Here Ye, Royalty Has Arrived

Carson High School's annual homecoming has arrived. Kicking off the event-filled week was an assembly Tuesday where seniors got their first taste of what candidates they might want to vote for to represent as their 2014 Homecoming royalty.

WNC's Cara McCarthy to Play Softball at New York College

After being told last season that she may never play softball again, Cara McCarthy continues to defy the odds in her softball career.

The Western Nevada College infielder and Bishop Manogue High School graduate announced on Saturday that she’ll continue her education and softball career at Nyack College, an NCAA Division II school in Nyack, N.Y.

“I was in talks with two different schools, both in New York. I was trying to go back East because that is where I’m from,” McCarthy said.

Racquel Abowd is a teacher in Carson City. In this video, Racquel discusses why she continues to choose to teach. She is joined in this talk by one of her students, Ivan Ramirez.

Abowd is a graduate of Bishop Manogue High School and Colorado State University, where she earned a degree in Marketing and Merchandising. Her business degree led her to work as a merchandising manager for a major retailor and then later in marketing with her brother in his financial planning business. But it was the Teacher’s Education program at Sierra Nevada College where Racquel found her calling to teach.

Two third-quarter interceptions turned the tide, and Nevin Elliott made sure Carson kept it. The Senators clinched the top seed in the Sierra League with a 45-28 win over Bishop Manogue at Manogue on Thursday.

Local Manogue Honors Student Recognizes Sacrifices and Patriotism of Others

Jake Bayliss, a senior at Reno’s Bishop Manogue High School and Carson City resident, decided to support American Veterans in need by organizing a “Toiletries Drive” to benefit the VA Hospital in Reno, Nevada. Jake gathered over 200 kits containing toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, razors, shaving cream and deodorant which he delivered to the VA Hospital on August 22, 2012.

Carson City free daily news summary for Nov. 22

The Carson Senators beat the Bishop Manogue Miners 32-21 last night in front of their home crowd, and advance to the Northern 4A championship game on Saturday.

Austin Pacheco turned the game in Carson's favor after intercepting a pass from Miners quarterback T.J. Menning and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown. Dylan Sawyers rang up 144 yards rushing for the Senators.

Carson beats Damonte Ranch 44-17

The Carson Senators defeated the Damonte Ranch Mustangs Friday night 44-17. Next week the Senators play the Miners of Bishop Manogue. That game is at Carson High School next Friday at 7:00pm in the semifinal round for the regional playoffs.

Play off games on Veterans Day?

I'm Nick Durst. I have been filming allot of the games for Carson Now. I am just curious about how come on Nevada Day schools play on that Thursday. But this Friday is Veterans Day and there will be high school football on Friday night instead of Thursday night. It just doses not make sense. Any way if you go This Friday night at 7:00pm Carson Plays Damonte Ranch High School. This will be at Carson high school. Last time the two teams played it was at Damonte ranch for the regular season. Which Carson won 28-21. Now they play for round one of the regional playoffs.
