High School Football Regional Championship: Reed 28, Carson 25
Saturday afternoon at Bishop Manogue High School the 2014 Northern Region football championship was underway. The Sierra League Champions were the Carson Senators and the High Desert Championships were the Reed Raiders and both are very good at the sport of football.
The action started on the very first play of the game when the Raiders set the tone early running back the opening kick off to go up 7-0 in just the first couple of seconds.
The next drive was the Senators first and looked fairly promising as the Senators took over on the 21 and drove nearly the entire length of the field but were held by an impressive goal line stand from Reed. The next drive was brief for the Raiders who went three and out and gave the Senators possession but the Senators did nothing with it and gave the ball right back to Reed on a punt.
Reed's following drive was a very impressive one as they showed no signs of struggling to run all over the Senators and find the endzone to go up 14-0. Carson looked promising in the ensuing drive with a huge connection from Joe Nelson to Asa Carter for a gain of about 30.
After a couple more blows to the Reed defense through the air, the drive ended with Seamus Burns rushing touchdown on 4th down and left the score at 14-7. Reed took over with a big kick return to about mid field. The first quarter expired in the middle of the Reed drive but the second quarter had a well deserved touchdown for the Raiders who went up 21-7.
Carson looked good on the next drive with an air assault that concluded with an Elijah Fajan touchdown run to bring the Senators back within striking range at 21-14. Carson held Reed to very minimal yardage on the next drive and that led to a Reed punt. Carson took over on the 47 on a drive to a field goal leaving the score 21-17. Reed took over and ran the clock out so the score at half was 21-17 Reed.
Carson received the second half kick off and started off in poor field position. After an intentional grounding call the Senators punted the ball from their own end zone and allowed Reed to take the punt back to about the 20. After Reed's first 4th down conversion, their second 4th down cashed in for a touchdown to go up 28-17.
Carson's next drive led to a punt and the Raiders took over at the Senators 31, but Reed's first big mistake of the game led to an Asa Carter interception to give the ball right back to the Senators. Carson was faced with fourth down and couldn't convert. Reed instead converted a couple of first downs before turning the ball over on downs themselves. Carson took the next drive all the way to the end zone and the two point conversion was good leaving the score 25-28 Reed with 6:59 left in the game. Reed took over and on the first play from scrimmage threw another interception.
Carson took over on the 40 and made a very exciting drive down the field and lined up for a short range field goal to tie up the game, but it ended up wide and left possession back to the Raiders. It only took one first down for the Raiders to line up in victory formation and kneel the ball down to finish the game with a final score of Reed 28, Carson 25.
