Even though Carson City is awash with Nevada Day festivities, Halloween is just as important. Here is an updated list of all the reasons to throw on a costume Saturday through Monday in Carson City and the surrounding valleys. Remember, rain is expected on Friday and Sunday, so consider an umbrella if you don’t want your make-up to run!

If today is any indication of how hard it is going to choose between fun activities, we have a tough few days ahead. The Carson Tahoe Spooktacular is an annual favorite for the kids, complete with treats, activities, and helicopers. It’s Family Night at the RSVP Nevada Day Carnival: thanks to Carson City Toyota-Scion, all rides are just $1. Dayton offers a Haunted Hayride through their old town history. Costumes are encouraged for this family fun event. Root beer floats await at the grand opening celebration of the newly renovated FISH.

You know you’re probably going to need some coffee, so head over to Dutch Brothers in the Carson Mall parking lot. One dollar of every drink goes to the Carson High Safe Grad Celebration. Western Nevada College is hosting an open house in the Reynolds Center for Technology featuring some of their great programs. Stick around for the artist reception celebrating the ‘521 Days’ exhibit by artist Wes Lee in the Bristlecone Building’s main gallery. Stop what you’re doing at 10:20 a.m. and brace yourself: the Great Nevada Shake-out Drill reminds us to be ready for earthquakes.

Something wicked this way comes. Enjoy Thursday’s balmy afternoon because the wind is blowing and bringing some cold, wet weather with it. Get a jump on your holiday gift list, the Touch of Class Craft Show begins at the Carson Valley Inn and runs through Saturday. The National Alliance on Mental Illness holds its Annual Gala at the Governor’s Mansion and features country singer, Jason DeShaw. Learn about some haunted history when several locals share their stories at the Carson Valley Cultural Center.

It’s Friday, Carson City. Time to shake off the workweek and take a break. The Trippin King Snakes hit the stage at Living the Good Life and will keep you on the dance floor. Capital City Arts Initiative keeps three galleries packed with new and interesting exhibits. Today, they welcome artist Chelsea Pegram to their space on the second floor of the Courthouse: all are welcome to the reception this evening at 5 p.m. The night sky is the topic of today’s program at Washoe Lake State Park; look up after dusk for a chance to catch some shooting stars.

As the sun sets earlier and the nights get colder, we prepare for all things autumn. In Carson City that’s Nevada Day, but Halloween is just as beloved. Virginia City gets a jump on all things ghoulish with their annual REDRUN zombie obstacle course this weekend – go HERE to register or for more information. Holy smokes, it’s the last day of September! We’ve enjoyed a summer and now it’s time to embrace the pumpkin, scarves, and all things autumn. Enjoy the nice evenings while we have them with an outdoor concert at Living the Good Life or a presentation on the night sky at Washoe Lake State Park. Sassafras is the place for some bluesy Americana with Muddy Boots and the Porch Pounders. Help cheer on our new Wildcats Soccer Team as they take on UC Davis and shout GO BIG BLUE as the CHS Varsity team battles Galena at tonight’s Homecoming football game. Wine walk weekend is almost upon us, along with the infamous Virginia City Outhouse Races. Start your day at Dutch Bros. Coffee and one dollar from every drink will find its way to the Boys and Girls Club. Today is the last day to view the Capital City Arts Initiative exhibit, ‘New Crop 2016’ on the second floor of the Courthouse, so head over there before it’s gone. Just like that, the season has changed. Keep a coat handy, Carson City, anything can happen now. Beach weather or blizzard: September keeps us on our toes. Battleborn Harley on Research Way is hosting one heck of a Street Vibrations party: live music, demos, and vendors galore. Swing a club for the Western Nevada College Foundation at Silver Oak Golf Course. Southbound Train arrives at Living the Good Life for an outdoor show, followed by a night of dancing. Autumn is blowing in, but don’t let that keep you indoors. Community Art Night returns to Telegraph Square with artists, live music, food trucks, and more. Learn what our local candidates think at the Carson City Arts and Cultural Coalition’s Candidate Forum in the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall. Carson City is looking for public input on the upcoming development along South Carson St., so head to Fuji Park to make your voice heard. Fun times can be found at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; it’s karaoke night.

Battle Born Harley Davidson takes motorcycles, leather and the roaring thunder to the street during the Street Vibrations Event, this Wednesday through Sunday: Sept. 21 through 25.

Historic Dayton is the place to be. The Annual Dayton Valley Days and Railroad Days features a chili cook-off, pet parade, pinewood derby race, and much more. Join CASI at Riverview Park for the annual 5K9 walk/run and don’t forget to bring your pooch. The Edible Pedal is one of the most delicious bike rides around with 100, 50, or 10 mile courses. Hundreds of people donned leis and Hawaiian garb Sunday for the annual Boys and Girls Club Luau at the new Multi-Purpose Athletic Center.

Carson City residents got their shred on Saturday during a recycle event and barbecue to benefit Special Olympics of Nevada, raising $1,360 during the event.

One last chance awaits to enjoy the Reno Balloon Races or Virginia City’s annual Camel Races, so don’t miss out. A remembrance ceremony will take place at the World Trade Center I-Beam Memorial in Mills Park to honor those lost fifteen years ago. The Carson Valley Trails Association, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and the Carson Valley Medical Center, will present its 8th annual Hike for Health Day on Saturday, September 17, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at The Nature Conservancy’s River Fork Ranch, located east of the Town of Genoa at 381 Genoa Lane.

Ribs and cantaloupes are on the menu today if you want to head out to Sparks or Fallon, respectively. Stay local and let the Elks Club serve you up some pancakes at their monthly breakfast. Saturday – Monday: Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum. Rides begin approximately every 40 minutes, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Fares are $8 for ages 12 and over; $4 for ages 4 to 11 and Museum members; and FREE for ages 3 and under.

Camping, fishing, barbecue, history, cantaloupes, music, wine, and so much more are moments away. The Comstock Residents Association’s 6th annual Labor Day Rummage Sale and BBQ is this weekend. The event takes place on Saturday, Sept. 3 and Sunday Sept. 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Silver City Park at 385 High Street (adjacent to the community center/school house).
