Fourth of July celebrations abound in the Carson City area. Fireworks can be found in Carson City, Reno, Sparks, and at both north and south shore of Lake Tahoe. There are several daytime events going on as well, so grab the kids, friends, and family and have a great Independence Day weekend!

Happy Thursday, Carson City. You won't want to miss out on Cedrick Williams' last performance of the summer at Living the Good Life. Enjoy an outdoor concert with the Sagebrush Rebels at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. You’ll find it located on Highway 88, just past the swimming pool in Minden, and remember to bring a chair. The Trippin King Snakes make their monthly appearance at the Carson Cigar Company for June’s Birthday Thursday. If you didn’t get your hot rod fix at the Rockabilly Riot, head to the Max Casino for Silver Dollar Cruise Night.

THURSDAY:

The Rockabilly Riot roars into town today and it’s bring cool cars, a tattoo expo, music, contests, pin-up girls, and so much more. Check it out at Mills Park and make sure to catch the talented officers competing in this year’s Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge while you’re there. The kids in town are getting a new Teen Center at the Boys and Girls Club: the ribbon cutting is at 10 a.m. You’ll find author Mike White at the Nevada State Museum this evening. His presentation on the best backpacking trips in Nevada and California is part of the Francis Humphrey Lecture Series.

CASI will be holding their annual Bark, Whine and Dine event on July 9th starting at 5:30 PM at Fuji Park. Dinner will be provided by the award winning Carson City BBQ.

There will be silent auction items galore. Join CASI for a fun filled night as they raise money to help build a play yard for the new animal shelter. Tickets are on sale now for $30.

Planes, trains, and bicycles are the theme of this Fathers’ Day weekend. Epic Rides has taken over downtown with booths, bikes, beer, music, and more. The Carson City Airport is hosting their annual Fly-in and Open house, complete with hot air balloon rides. World War II aviation buffs won’t want to miss the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport. Steampunk meets Steam trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum. It's Friday, Carson City. Epic Rides descends on our valley, and I must say, it is one epic event. Beware that quite a few of our downtown streets will be closed and there will be bikes everywhere. Live music can be found at a stage on Musser Street, the Brewery Arts Center, and most all of our casinos. A huge welcome goes out to those in town for the Annual Pow Wow at Stewart Indian School. Don't forget that Fathers' Day is Sunday: plenty of our local shops have something just perfect for the man in your life.

Step into the past today: the Pony Express re-ride is coming through town. It’s anticipated around 2 p.m. and you can follow their path online HERE. World War II buffs are going to love the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport; you have until Sunday afternoon to see the planes. Head to Telegraph Square downtown for the first Community Art Night sponsored by Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery and the Charlie B. Gallery.

The inaugural Moose Lodge Barbecue will be held on Saturday, June 18, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ross Gold Park, 280 Appion Way, Carson City. The community is invited. The barbecue includes burgers, chips and soda for $5.

Let’s go to the Fair, Carson City. Mills Park is hopping with activity: a carnival, car show, exhibits, music, and a return of the Rendezvous. Bike Month is only a third of the way through, but Bike Week in Carson City is coming to a close. For those taking their bike to work today, Comma Coffee and LA Bakery are offering a cup of joe on your way. Pedal your way to the Max Casino for the Grand Opening of the Black Bear Diner; you’re going to need your strength to get through this day full of fun stuff to do. The Nevada State Fair is in full swing and a street dance at the Pavilion starts at 6 p.m.

Thursday is something to celebrate. The long-awaited Nevada State Fair kicks off in Mills Park with a ribbon cutting by Governor Sandoval. Grab the kids, your friends, and family and enjoy carnival rides, county exhibits, civil war reenactments and much more. Our neighbors to the south are celebrating, too: the 106th Annual Carson Valley Days is this weekend. If you’re looking for something quieter, the lecture on the Civil War at the Gold Hill Hotel or an author’s talk on the Ghost Railroads of Central Nevada at the Nevada State Railroad Museum might be a better bet.

Hold onto your hats, Carson City, summer has arrived with a bang. Bikes, brews, bulls and broncs are just a few of the things you’ll find on this event summary. What a week. Granted, it was a short one, but school got out for the summer and we saw the weather go from a wintery chill to summery hot. Get your early primary vote in this afternoon, then stick around for the Artist Reception for the new exhibit in the CCAI Gallery upstairs in the Courthouse Building. Live music can be found at our bigger casinos, and a dj will keep you on the dance floor at Jimmy G’s, Alatte in the Carson Nugget, and Living the Good Life. Sassafras welcomes Bryan McPherson to the stage at 8 pm; you’ll want to get there earlier to take full advantage of their menu.

June is Bike Month in Carson City, and the weather is being more than cooperative. Bike to work week begins Monday, so get back in the swing of things with the Muscle Powered Bike Ride this afternoon. If motorcycles are more your style, Bike Night at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar is the place to be. Don’t forget to stick around for karaoke.

The weather this week has been a challenge but it is supposed to change for the better as we head into the long holiday weekend. Although the forecast may be warm and sunny with a chance of thunderstorms, remember the waters flowing in our rivers are just above freezing temperatures and can be dangerous.

Campfires and bar-be-ques are just around the corner: Memorial Day weekend is almost here. Get a jump on the fun with some live music at Living the Good Life or Glen Eagles. Learn something new with Dr. Hattori at the Nevada State Museum. An improv workshop at the Brewery Arts Center will get your creative juices flowing. The Capitol Amphitheater is where you’ll enjoy a new spin on the Taming of the Shrew, performed by the Carson High Theater Arts Department. Don’t forget a doggie-bag after a meal at Adele’s today: the Bone Appetit fundraiser for the Nevada Humane Society goes on all day.

How’d we get to Thursday so quickly? Choose from live music at Living the Good Life, a fun night of karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, or even a lecture on the Dayton Cemetery. Ready to have some fun? Virginia City’s Chili on the Comstock Cook-off goes on all weekend. For some healthier fare, hit up the Spring Farmers Market downtown. Go fly a kite at Dangberg Home Historic Park, just past Douglas High School on Highway 88; their ‘Something in the Wind’ Celebration is both Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget to leave non-perishable food by your mailbox: the annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive is today. Want to learn something new? The Gold Hill Hotel, the Dayton Historical Society, and the Douglas County Historical Society are all offering a glimpse into the past. The American Sign Language Club at Western Nevada College invites you to an evening of storytelling, poetry, music, and fun at their ‘Open Hands Night.’ Empire Ranch is starting up its 9 and Dine events tomorrow, the only catch is that you’ve got to register by noon today. You’ll find dinner music at Glen Eagles, Sassafras, and Living the Good Life.

Nothing will rain on our parade, Carson City. In addition to the monthly wine walk, the weekend offers a carnival, train rides, the Kentucky Derby, Mother’s Day and more. Tonight, Western Nevada Musical Theater Company debuts their spring musical ‘42nd Street.’ Find improv at the Brewery Arts Center or Comedy at the Carson Nugget. Drinking with Clowns hits the stage at Sassafras and Motown is on the menu at Living the Good Life. Food with friends is in order at Silver City’s Community Dinner Night or at A to Zen’s first ‘Fancy Friday’ open mic night.

The weekend is getting started early. Cinco de Mayo brings out drink specials, parties, and fun throughout the valley. Don’t forget that Mother’s Day is on Sunday, so head to Carson Mall for something special or swing by the Elks Club after 4 p.m. to grab tickets for their Champagne Brunch. The RSVP Spring Carnival kicks off tonight with family night: all rides are a dollar.

Ready for a great day, Carson City? It’s a day of beginnings all over the place. The new Italian restaurant, Angelina’s, inside the Carson Nugget is celebrating its Grand Opening all weekend. The annual Cowboy Festival in Genoa begins this afternoon and includes music, demonstrations, art exhibits, and more. Join the United Federal Credit Union for their ribbon cutting this afternoon, and enjoy live music and BBQ. Today is ‘Dining Out for Life,’ so head to Peg’s Glorified Ham and Eggs, Sassafras, or Adele’s to help raise funds for Northern Nevada Hopes.

Thank goodness we are only two months from the first day of summer; spring is such an unpredictable season. Blustery today, rainy tomorrow, the threat of some snow in a few days. Take advantage of a nice day whenever it appears. Bike night at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar is one way to do that.

After that cold snap earlier this week, it’s time to go enjoy the sunshine. Spend the afternoon cheering on the WNC Wildcats as they take on Salt Lake Community College. You’ll find the softball double-header at Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds; baseball is played at the Harvey Field at Western Nevada College. • National Library Week

The seniors of Carson High School will deliver their Senior Project speeches on April 18. Each student must deliver an 8-12 minute speech in front of 4-5 Carson City Community members, and this is no easy task as, statistically, many fear public speaking more than death.

What a wonderful community we live in. Music, theater, hiking, biking, wining, dining, walking, TED-talking, animal loving, state governing, and so much more are available in our valley. The days are getting longer and there is so much in store for us in the coming weeks and months as we journey into summer. Take a good gander at my list of what’s going on in the Carson City area. It is always arranged chronologically by start time.
