A Letter to Derek Jeter

Dear Mr. Jeter,

Where do I start? First of all, that was a great run huh? Twenty years is an amazing accomplishment and to do it the way you did was something that I will probably never see again. I never thought as a little kid in 1996 when you took over the starting position at shortstop for the New York Yankees that I would be looking up to you and calling you one of my idols.

Major Sports Need Major Overhaul In Domestic Violence Policies

So for the last couple of weeks we have seen the issue of domestic violence come into the forefront of major sports and its athletes. The NFL of course taking most of the attention with the Ray Rice turmoil. MLB has also been put into the spotlight when its commissioner Bud Selig was asked about the issue during his farewell tour in San Francisco. Here is part of what he had to say on the subject:

WNC Baseball Team Continues Academic Success

At one of the top junior college programs in the country, baseball comes second to academics. Western Nevada College in Carson City once again made the National Junior College Athletic Association’s list of All-Academic Teams for the 2013-14 school year.

Wildcats coach D.J. Whittemore said that players learn before they arrive at WNC that their academic success is more important than what they accomplish on the diamond.

WNC Baseball: Busy final MLB draft day as five former ‘Cats taken

Growing up only a half-hour away from Seattle in Maple Valley, Wash., the Seattle Mariners have always been Taylor Smart’s baseball team.

The former Western Nevada College infielder’s boyhood dream of one day playing for the Mariners became closer to reality on Saturday when the Mariners selected Smart in the 26th round of the Major League Baseball draft.

WNC Baseball: Harber Named Third-Team All-American

No one is ever going to call Conor Harber a one-dimension player. Two straight All-American honors and two different paths to the award certainly highlight the Western Nevada College baseball player’s versatility.

Harber became the first Wildcat to earn back-to-back All-American honors when the National Junior College Athletic Association named the sophomore pitcher to the third team earlier this week.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats bring handful of prospects to MLB draft

One of the great mysteries of sports is the amateur baseball draft. With the largest pool of players under consideration for draft selection than any other major sport and ball players being scouted from a variety different levels, there is plenty of uncertainty to go around.

Even with a 40-round format, many outstanding players go unselected by a Major League Baseball team. However, a draft hasn’t gone by without at least one Western Nevada College player being selected since the Carson City baseball program formed in 2006.

WNC Baseball: South Mountain Ends Wildcats’ Season

For the second time in a little more than 24 hours, South Mountain Community College did what no other team in the West could do to the Western Nevada College Wildcats during the 2014 baseball season: win in abbreviated fashion.

The Cougars ousted the Wildcats of Carson City from the Western District Tournament, 9-1, in seven innings on Friday in Phoenix. The host Cougars scored five runs in the seventh inning on a pair of two-run singles to deliver he knockout blow to WNC, which staved off elimination with an 8-2 victory over Trinidad State on Friday morning.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats Stay Alive at Western District Tournament in Phoenix

Dusting themselves off after their worst loss of the season, the Western Nevada College Wildcats showed why they are still playing baseball in the middle of May. Spenser Dorsey belted a two-run homer and the Wildcats rapped out eight hits in the first three innings en route to an 8-2 victory over Trinidad State of Trinidad, Colo., at the Western District Tournament on Friday in Phoenix.

“A great job by our team of bouncing back, which they’ve done all year,” WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. “It was an all-around team effort.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats head for third straight Western District tourney

Work ethic, determination, commitment and effort are just some of the qualities that contribute to the Western Nevada College baseball team’s success. That the Wildcats are still playing when many junior college teams have packed away their equipment and uniforms is a product of a program designed to make the players successful.

“It’s a testament to the work ethic of the players, a testament to the culture established by previous teams and the quality of the position coaches that are developing the players,” said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore. “We go into every game expecting to win.”

Column: Giving away your special collections

First make a list of your collections of special items. It could be antique furniture, old guns, special china or silverware, dolls, sculptures, old cars, baseball cards, etc.

Then consider meeting with the family before you decide which items will go to which family members (or friends). Maybe a beneficiary will prefer receiving cash instead of a collectible item.

Then think about which person will be the best choice for particular items. Which one will pass on to the grandchildren and future generations?

WNC Baseball: Wildcats Triumph over Salt Lake Bruins in regional tournament

The Western Nevada College Wildcats took on Scenic West’s topped-rank Salt Lake Community College Bruins Saturday at the Region XVIII tournament. Carson edges out Douglas 4-3 on senior night

The Carson High School Baseball team had hosted a senior night of their own earlier tonight. The festivities took place before the game, which highlighted all of the seniors. This year’s class of 2014 ball players include: Dustin Dutcher, Dominic Norton, Chase Blueberg, Todd Thomsen, Jace Zampirro, Gehrig Tucker, and Charles Nystrom.

The rivalry was real in this one, with the umpire talking to both benches multiple times and even an ejection of one of the coaches.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats’ Offense Overwhelms College of Southern Nevada

Getting the best of College of Southern Nevada has become the norm for the Western Nevada College baseball team in 2014. That trend continued at the Region 18 baseball tournament on Thursday as the Wildcats withstood a late rally by the Coyotes for a 10-6 victory in Salt Lake City.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats end regular season on winning note

For the second straight day, the Western Nevada College baseball took more than a game to light up the scoreboard. But like the Wildcats have done all season, they didn’t allow one subpar performance lead to two.

The Wildcats of Carson City concluded their regular season with a 5-2 victory over College of Southern Idaho on Saturday in Twin Falls, Idaho.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats to enter Region Tournament as No. 2 Seed

Western Nevada College pulled off a rare triple play and executed three double plays, but it wasn’t enough to prevent College of Southern Idaho from ending its hopes of hosting the Region 18 Tournament next week.

Kolton Brost became the first pitcher to shut out the Wildcats this season, blanking the Wildcats on four hits and striking out 11 as the Golden Eagles carved out a 5-0 Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball victory on Friday in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Manogue's defense proves too much for Carson on the baseball diamond

Manouge went straight to work with a single into left field, right after an error by Brandon Allen who fumbled the ball after a bunt. Then after a fielder's choice to get out number two, it looked like trouble early for the Senators, but a pop out to short stop made it a harmless inning with 1 hit, 1 error, no run top of the first.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats Remain in Contention for SWAC Title

Going into the final week of the Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball season, the race for first place is finally clear.

Western Nevada College needs to sweep a four-game series from College of Southern Idaho to win the regular-season title outright for the first time since 2011. The SWAC champion serves as the host for the May 7-10 Region 18 Tournament.
