Man jailed on felony assault charge in alleged hammer and bat attack

A 39-year-old man was jailed Monday after he allegedly attacked another man with a hammer and baseball bat, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said. Benjamin Amos Smith is being held on $30,500 bail. He also has a misdemeanor warrant for his arrest out of Reno Township Court.

Officers were dispatched at 3:45 p.m. to the 900 block of South Roop Street on a call for battery with a deadly weapon, according to the arrest report.

Officers met with the victim, who was bleeding from his head, neck and left forearm. He stated that while he and his girlfriend were outside their residence, Smith drove into a parking space in front and confronted the two. Smith was the ex-boyfriend of the victim’s girlfriend, according to the arrest report.

The victim stated that Smith exited the truck with a baseball bat and hammer in his hands, striking him on his head with the hammer. The victim also stated Smith swung the baseball bat at his head area, in which he blocked it with his left forearm and then managed to get the bat away from him, striking Smith on the right shoulder area.

Smith fled the scene on foot and was found by deputies in the area of South Roop and Second Street. He was arrested at 4:06 p.m.

In other arrests:

According to the arrest report, on Aug. 10, officers were dispatched to the area for a report of shots fired. An anonymous person called police and stated people were shooting firearms behind the residence.

Upon arrival, officers found the father of the suspect near an RV in the back of the residence and spoke with him, who admitted to shooting a BB gun at a cardboard target behind the home with his son, Jason Fisher, but did not know firing the BB gun was illegal.

Officers conducted a wants and warrant check. Jason Fisher then fled the scene through a field. He was caught and taken into custody. The arrest warrant was issued out of Reno District Court, possession of a control substance. Bail: $5,000.

The woman allegedly hit the vehicle in the parking lot twice and then fled into her apartment. Officers knocked on the suspect’s door and she refused to come out.

The victim, who is also the apartment manager, let the officers inside and the woman agreed to talk to officers. There was alcohol coming from her as she spoke. She was asked if she had been drinking. She said that she had not that day but the previous day. She was asked if she would participate in standardized field sobriety tests but she declined and said she just wanted to give the victim her insurance cards.

The woman was taken into custody. She asked officers to retrieve her medication, Xanax located in her purse. An officer retrieved an empty bottle labeled 120 pills that was filled July 29, 2014, the arrest report states.
