Column: Rent or own? Stay or go?

Especially older adults have a choice to consider, rent or own a home? Like most questions, it gets answered with more questions.
Do you want to stay in your home in retirement or do you want to move? If you stay, what will it cost for property taxes, insurance, maintenance, repairs and utilities? Will that total housing cost be easy or difficult to pay on the retirement income?

Letter: Carson City Planning Heroes

Downtown Brewery Renovation

Editor: I have been in the antiques business in Downtown Carson City for more than 15 years. The last six years have been extremely difficult, but perhaps our state may have reached a turning point.

In the last 15 years I have been involved in dozens of community meetings and planning sessions that were generally boring and filled with doomsayers and negativism. I've spent hundreds of hours gnashing my teeth listening to every malcontent in town who says that saving our Downtown is a waste of time and money. They have said it's by-the-way impossible.

2nd Annual Vintage Fall Harvest Faire Oct. 4

Event Date:
October 4, 2014 - 9:00am

Due Sorella (fondly known as Two Sisters) will be holding its 2nd Annual Vintage Fall Harvest Faire Oct. 4 from 9am-4pm in the parking lot behind the store at 202 N. Curry St. Carson City during the Downtown Wine Walk. Farm-fresh produce, Vintage Vendors, Antiques, Arts, Crafts, Food, and music will take over the corner of Musser St. and Nevada St. Some vendors already committed include Capital Eats, Workman Farms, Vintage Becky M, and Miss Maggy's Stuff.

The store is open Tuesday-Saturdays 11am-5pm and features unique and vintage gifts, crafts, and a rabbit named Sweet Pea.

Column: Be careful when disposing personal property

When someone dies or transfers to assisted living, it is important to be careful on giving old furniture and personal affects to charity or selling items at a garage sale. It was recently reported that a trio of college students in New York earlier this year bought a lumpy couch for $20 at a Salvation Army store.

Column: Making this year's charity tax deductions

Giving your church or favorite charity is a wonderful thing to do. Getting income tax savings helps, but that is not really why you give them your time and treasure.

The stock market has been very good, most stocks moving up in price. If you have some stocks or mutual funds that have increased in value since you purchased them, maybe you could consider using some of them to make charitable gifts?

Letter: Downtown Carson City Development - On Street Parking

I have been a business owner in Downtown Carson City for more than 12 years. I have spent more than $200,000.00 of my own money to rehab my building that was built in about 1870.

I have spent more than a million dollars to stock my business with what I believe are quality antiques. We have the largest and possibly best antique shop in Nevada. I have never asked for or received any City, State or Federal funds.

Downtown Carson City has some fine restaurants and venues including the Nevada State Museum, The State Capitol Building and interesting shops.
