FERNLEY — Healthy Communities Coalition's Stand Tall and the Family Resource Center are hosting the 5th Annual Turkey Trot 5K at the Fernley High on Saturday, November 18th beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Pre-registration for the 2017 Carson City Turkey Trot ends Thursday night. More than 300 runners have signed up so far and the weather is forecasted for sunny skies on Thanksgiving Day.

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City. Now that we are in November, thoughts turn to the holiday season. That means craft fairs. St. Paul’s Lutheran Family on Saliman welcomes you to their annual Craftique Open House. You’ll find the Young at Heart Seniors Club hosting a faire at the Douglas County Community Center. The Carson Nugget’s Sierra Room will be home to several artisans, vendors, and crafters during today’s wine walk. There’s quite a bit more, and plenty that doesn’t involve shopping, so take a look and have a great time.

The Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City lit the way Saturday night during the Light After Dark Run/Walk fundraiser, an annual benefit for Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

Help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the Carson City community by signing up and joining Advocates to End Domestic Violence at its annual Light After Dark Walk and Run event this Saturday, 6 p.m. at Silver Oak Golf and Event Center in Carson City.

I don’t know what is about Tuesdays in our valley, but they’re hopping. Join Parks and Recreation as they take a walk to the Kings Canyon Waterfall, one of Carson City’s not-so-hidden treasures. Enjoy the Carson High Orchestra during their Fall Concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater tonight at 7 p.m. It’s Adult Coloring Night at the Carson City Library: bring your favorite doodle book, or choose from one of theirs. Know-it-alls can strut their stuff during DJ Trivia at Fox Brewpub, or at the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint.

It’s easy to get excited about Halloween as it approaches. October is filled with pumpkin stuff, haunted houses, and plenty of parties. But here in the capital city, we have Nevada Day to anticipate, as well: a day filled with hot air balloons, parade floats, music, competitions, and plenty of Battle Born fun. While you’re waiting for the three-day weekend, go enjoy Monday. Football, swing dancing, and karaoke are all on the menu.

Carson High School junior Ethan Byassee placed first in Race for the Cure held Sunday at City Plaza in downtown Reno. The 17-year-old finished with a time of 17:23. Ethan is a member of the CHS Varsity Cross Country team and Track and Field teams.

I’ve said it before: Tuesdays are pretty busy around Carson City. Mile High Jazz Band gets the night jumping at Comma Coffee. The Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz and DJ Trivia are always a good way to stretch one’s intellect. Take a walk on the wild side, well, art side of Carson City with today’s special Easy Walk hosted by Muscle Powered: you’ll get a glimpse of all our downtown art show, including the newest exhibit at the Courthouse Gallery showcasing Susanne Forestieri . It’s always a good day to try something new. If you enjoyed the recent production of ‘Nightfall with Edgar Allen Poe’ then head over to the Proscenium Players monthly meeting and learn how to be involved with their upcoming plays. Jump, jive, and wail with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club at Carson Lanes. They hold a beginning and intermediate dance class before an evening of open dancing. The Vikings-Bears rivalry can be seen on ESPN during tonight’s Monday Night Football Game; cheer on your team and fill up on great food at Living the Good Life.

Every week I bring you all the happenings in Carson City, my hometown of over 35 years, but I was born in Las Vegas. I’m heartsick over what transpired Sunday night, but equally comforted by the outpouring of support this community has shown. Nevada Day is just weeks away, and I am truly grateful to be Battle Born. Get geared up for our Admission Day with the Nevada Day Treasure Hunt – clues start today, so get out your history books and your hiking boots. Thinking caps are recommended at DJ Trivia at the Fox Brewpub or the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras.

Dozens of spectators and participants released balloons Saturday morning on Bob McFadden Plaza in downtown Carson City to recognize a loved one lost to suicide.

With all the motorcycles on the road, you may be looking for some peace and quiet. Luckily, it’s fee-free day at all of the Nevada State Parks. Load up the kids, pack a picnic, at head to the great outdoors. Don’t miss out on the last-of-the-season Farmers Market at Third and Curry, stock up on local honey and load your basket with yummy stuff. Oktoberfest takes over the McFadden Plaza at 3 p.m. Bavarian and German beers, authentic food, and live music await. Keep reading for everything the area has to offer.

Enjoy these September days, it will be blustery and cold before we know it. Celebrate our neighbor to the east during their annual Dayton Valley Days street festival. Avery Hudak, 22, tied for first place in last year’s Carson City Kiwanis Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day 5K.
While it was a personal accomplishment for the runner, it was also a victory for her mother, who died from pancreatic cancer in 2014.

On September 13, Carson High School will open its doors a little wider and longer for a back to school night like no other. Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity and diverse talents of Carson City.

Participants in the 5K Walk for Suicide Prevention walk through downtown Carson City Saturday morning to help raise awareness about suicide. Partnership Carson City, the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention and the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention co-host the event to educate the community about resources available for people suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts, as well as give support for their families.

I’m going to suggest that you keep this weekend’s plans flexible. There’s only a chance of rain, but the chance of it showing up at the wrong time is always high. The very early morning is best spent watching the hot air balloons against the Reno skyline, but you’ll probably want a sweater for the pre-dawn chill. Head up the hill to Virginia City this weekend. Partnership Carson City is teaming up with the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention and the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention for Carson City’s third 5K Walk for Suicide Prevention. The walk will be 10 a.m. Sept. 9, beginning at the Bob McFadden Plaza, 223 W. Third St.

Six years ago, shots rang out and Carson City was thrust into the middle of a tragedy. Four people died in the IHOP shooting, three of them National Guard members. Today, they will be honored again during the annual Remembrance Run. If you are driving along Fairview, please give them some extra room. Wheeled Truck Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center is a ‘weather permitting’ event, so keep your eye out for rain clouds.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Guard is set to host a memorial run/walk on Wednesday, Sept. 6, to commemorate the victims of the International House of Pancakes shooting that occurred in 2011.

In his 1624 prose poem, “No man is an island” John Donne writes about the symbiotic relationship between one human being joined to all human beings, how the loss of one effects everyone negatively and how the strength of one can impact everyone positively.

Make this weekend something special. School starts up on Monday and it will be Halloween before we blink an eye. The Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival at Battle Born Harley boasts a full day of live music, vendors, activities and family fun. Bowers Mansion plays host to the annual Bluegrass Festival – bring a picnic and enjoy. Downtown Carson City will see the first of three monthly Beer Crawls; if you get there early, head over to Remedy’s to witness their yearly Bloody Mary Competition. JDRF of Northern Nevada will be holding its annual One Walk on Sunday, September 24, 2017, to raise awareness and funding for the local chapter.
Each year, nearly 3,000 people ascend on the University of Nevada campus to rally for JDRF's mission to turn "type one into type none."

After a tough 10-4 loss to El Paso, the Aces looked to rebound in a hurry Saturday, July 15th in Greater Nevada Field. With a small sample size of outings under their belts, starting pitchers Matt Koch (Reno) and Kyle Lloyd (El Paso) took the mound hoping to break the 1-1 tie in the four-game series.

It’s time to tie up your shoelaces and prepare to walk or run in the Reno Hemophilia Walk & 5K to support the inherited bleeding disorder community in northern Nevada. The 1-Mile Walk & 5K Run will take place on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Bartley Ranch Regional Park, 6000 Bartley Ranch Rd., Reno.

There are many aspects that go into organizing an endurance race — the logistics of the course, permits, lottery registration, aid stations and more. But for George Ruiz, director of the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Run, his overarching motivation is helping the individual runner find the strength to cross the finish line.

‘We hold these truths to be self-evident…’ With those few powerful words, the Declaration of Independence set a few east coast colonies on a path to becoming ‘the land of the free, and the home of the brave.’ Less than 100 years later, the great ‘Battle Born’ state of Nevada would join the fold.
