Quad-County, Carson City COVID-19 weekly update: 4 deaths, 203 new cases and 305 recoveries

Carson City Health and Human Services is providing the Quad-County community with a weekly update for the week starting Dec. 16 and ending Dec. 22, 2021.

Quad-County COVID-19 Weekly Updates Stopping
Starting the first week of January 2022 CCHHS, will no longer provide weekly COVID-19 updates. The final Weekly Quad-County COVID-19 Update will be issued on December 30, 2021. All information provided in the updates can be found on the Nevada Health Response’s Dashboard at https://nvhealthresponse.nv.gov/

CCHHS will provide weekly surveillance reports for the Quad-Counties.

CCHHS will continue monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.

COVID-19 Case Update
For the week, CCHHS is reporting 4 deaths, 203 new cases, and 305 additional recoveries of COVID-19 in the Quad-County Region. This brings the total number of cases to 22,262, with 17,383 recoveries and 413 deaths; 4,466 cases remain active.

Population information and the current 14-day moving average and test positive rates are taken from the Nevada Health Response Dashboard found at https://nvhealthresponse.nv.

Carson City had 2 deaths, 66 new cases, and 98 additional recoveries of COVID-19 this week. The current 14-day moving average for Carson City is 6 new cases per day with a 3.7% test positivity rate.

Douglas County had 1 death, 62 new cases, and 83 additional recoveries of COVID-19 this week. The current 14-day moving average for Douglas County is 5 new cases per day with a 7.7% test positivity rate.

Lyon County had 1 death, 74 new cases, and 123 additional recoveries of COVID-19 this week. The current 14-day moving average for Lyon County is 6 new cases per day with an 8.2% test positivity rate.

Storey County had 1 new case and 1 additional recovery of COVID-19 this week. The current 14-day moving average for Storey County is 0 new cases per day with a 6.3% test positivity rate.

COVID-19 Vaccination Update
As of December 22, 2021, approximately 224,055 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered by Quad-County providers. CCHHS has administered 74,829 doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

Approximately 88,801 Quad-County residents have completed vaccination (received both doses of a 2-dose series vaccine such as Pfizer or Moderna or received the single dose Janssen vaccine) and 99,090 have initiated it (received the first dose of a 2-dose series such as Pfizer or Moderna.

This number also includes those who completed the series). Data is not CCHHS’ and is taken from the Nevada Health Response Dashboard which can be found at https://nvhealthresponse.nv.gov/

In Carson City, 34,004 residents have been completely vaccinated and 37,916 have initiated vaccination. Approximately 62.6% of the population 5 years and older have completed vaccination.

In Douglas County, 25,881 residents have been completely vaccinated and 28,850 have initiated vaccination. Approximately 54.5% of the population 5 years and older have completed vaccination.

In Lyon County, 28,077 residents have been completely vaccinated and 31,389 have initiated vaccination. Approximately 50.4% of the population 5 years and older have completed vaccination.

In Storey County, 839 residents have been completely vaccinated and 935 have initiated vaccination. Approximately 20.6% of the population 5 years and older have completed vaccination.

Quad-County Breakthrough Cases
Vaccine breakthrough cases are individuals who test positive for COVID-19 14 or more days after they have completed all recommended doses of an FDA authorized COVID-19 vaccine. A complete vaccination is two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or one dose of the Johnson and Johnson (Janssen) vaccine. Since February 1, 2021, breakthrough cases make up 16% of all Quad-County cases ages 5 years and older.

Upcoming CCHHS Walk-In COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics
All vaccines are available on a walk-in basis at every event for first, second, and third doses for those who are immunocompromised. Pfizer, Moderna, and Janssen booster doses are available for those who are eligible. Pfizer boosters are now available for those ages 16 and 17 years! Pediatric Pfizer available for those ages 5 to 11 years.

On Saturday, June 15, at 10 a.m., historian and author Mark McLaughlin will return to Dangberg Historic Park to speak on Charles F. McGlashan who was an American writer, historian, journalist, educator, lawyer, amateur entomologist and astronomer.

The Friends of the Nevada State Museum are hosting a white elephant sale at the Nevada State Museum on Saturday, June 29. This event will run concurrently with a Museum Staff Show & Shine Car Show. Proceeds from the events will support the restoration of a 1967 Chevrolet pickup truck for the State Museum.

The Sullivan Fire in Sparks has burned an estimated 150 acres as of Wednesday morning.

A 76-year-old man has been identified in the fatal June 1 crash involving a motorcycle rider on State Route 341 Geiger Grade.

Starting in mid-August, day-use reservations will be required on weekends and holidays at Lake Tahoe’s popular Sand Harbor State Park.

In August, 2023, several wildfires ignited on the island of Maui in Hawaii. The worst one occurred on August 8, 2023, when a brush fire ignited near the town of Lahaina. Hundreds of homes burned in a matter of minutes and ultimately over 100 people lost their lives. The Lions of Hawaii have helped address the needs of the survivors since then, but it will take years to recover from this major disaster.

Nevada State Police have identified a 30-year-old Dayton man in a fatal crash that happened June 2 on Six Mile Canyon Road and San Clemens in Lyon County, Nev. One person has been arrested for suspicion of DUI.

The Northern Nevada Exotic Pet Expo is coming to the capital city this weekend, June 15-16 at the Carson City Community Center.

According to organizers, exotic pet vendors from all over the western U.S. join the expo each year bringing reptiles, exotic pets, supplies, and much more.

Billiards is a family tradition for Crystal Sandoval. While she was born and raised in Carson City, as well as a Carson High graduate, her parents are immigrants: her father was born in Honduras, and her mother in Nicaragua, and they had run a billiards hall in Nicaragua for years before coming to Carson City.

"When the whole family came over to the states, they brought the idea to me to continue the family business, since they had it for a long time," Sandoval said.

UPDATE 4:50PM: The fire at the landfill has been extinguished, according to Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Jon Pedrini.
The fire was around 100 foot by 40 foot and knocked down by firefighters and work crews at the scene. There were no threats to structures or wildland.
