Carson City arrests: Pair face felony charges after thefts at Kohl’s and Walmart

Two were arrested Sunday on felony charges of grand larceny after they allegedly attempted to steal more than $700 in merchandise for Kohl’s department store, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said. One of the two also faces an additional felony charge after an alleged theft of more than $680 in merchandise at Walmart.

Kristofer Jacob Schutten, 21, and Ashleigh Taylor Baldwinson, 19, both of Carson City, were taken into custody at 9:13 p.m. in the 3800 block of South Carson Street, each facing a charge of grand larceny.

Over the course of the investigation, Schutten now faces a second charge of felony grand larceny, misdemeanor violation of Department of Alternative Sentencing conditions and petit larceny.

According to the arrest report, deputies spoke with a loss prevention officer who reported he observed the man and woman selecting merchandise, 26 pieces in all with a value of $754.68. Both entered the fitting room at Kohl’s and concealed the items in a baby stroller and on their person.

The pair then exited the store, passing all points of payment without attempting to pay for the merchandise. Once outside the officer approached the suspects and escorted them back into the store, the arrest report states.

The arresting deputy learned that another investigation was also underway for a separate larceny. As that investigation was underway, the two were taken into custody for suspicion of grand larceny for the alleged Kohl’s theft.

The other theft happened at Walmart. An Asset Protection Associate told deputies the store manager advised of a theft that happened Saturday where suspect Schutten had walked out of the store with merchandise.

Deputies were advised Schutten and a female walked into the store. The man had a shopping cart and the woman a baby stroller. He was observed selecting multiple items in the cell phone department of the store and then placing them in a cart, the report states.

Schutten was then observed going to the electronic section where he selected an audio sound bar. He placed the sound bar on the bottom of the shopping cart, the report states.

He then went to the computer aisle where he removed a security device from a laptop computer and then placed it in the cart. He then met up with the woman briefly. Then the man was seen going to the alcohol section, selecting bottles of alcohol and placing them in his cart, the report states.

The man is then seen attempting to leave the store in the lawn and garden section but the doors are locked. He then opened the doors to the storage room that leads to the fire exit doors. He pushed the cart with the items out of the fire exit doors, to a black Chevrolet Cobalt, where he unloaded the items and drove away. The items were valued at $681.74.

Through the course of the investigation it was learned Schutten had allegedly stolen items on Dec 8 from Walmart, loading a cart with merchandise including a 40-inch television valued at $245 and was seen walking out of the garden center without paying and left in a black Chevrolet Cobalt.

Bail for Schutten: $53,352. Bail for Baldwinson: $25,000.
