Las Vegas Police: Multiple victims reported in active shooting at UNLV, one suspect is dead
Police say a suspect is dead after reports of an active shooter situation at UNLV on Wednesday.
Officials are expected to release more details about the shooting, which unfolded a little before noon on the UNLV campus. UNLV officials said in an emergency notification at 12:45 p.m. that the suspect had been contained, while urging students to continue sheltering in place.
University and Las Vegas police issued several messages on social media warning of an active shooter at Beam Hall, which houses the Lee Business School, and urged students to run, hide and fight. Another emergency notification stated that university police were responding to reports of shots fired in the university’s student union.
The incident took place just weeks before the end of the semester.
Officials have not released information about any casualties, but Las Vegas police reported there appeared to be multiple victims. Sheriff Kevin McMahill and University Police Department member Adam Garcia will provide a preliminary update on the situation at Harmon Ave. and Escondido around 1:30 p.m.
Nevada State Police closed down I-15 northbound from Blue Diamond to Charleston Boulevard to accommodate first responders. Tropicana, Paradise and University roads are closed as well.
All classes at Nevada System of Higher Education institutions are canceled for the remainder of the day.
An airport control operations operator at Harry Reid International Airport said in a phone interview Wednesday afternoon that reports of a ground stop at the airport were inaccurate. The airport is fully operational.
