Carson City man charged with three counts of felony burglary after pawning heirloom rings

A 40-year-old Carson City man was arrested on three felony burglary charges Thursday evening after allegedly stealing heirloom rings from his employer.

Deybi Mendoza-Galindo was a handyman for a woman who was the Trustee for a family trust.

A beneficiary of the trust had a viewing of the assets for legal counsel where it was noted that two heirloom rings were unaccounted for.

A third beneficiary reported seeing a friend and handyman for the Trustee, Deybi Mendoza, frequently on the property.

The two rings that were missing was a men’s gold ring with 3 1/4 carat diamonds and the Harrah’s logo on the front, and a men’s gold ring with gold nuggets on one side and 1/2 to 3/4 carat diamonds next to the nuggets.

A check by investigators revealed that Deybi Mendoza-Galindo pawned at least one ring on Aug. 4 at a local Carson City jewelry and pawn shop, and sold at least one at a local Carson City coin and pawn shop.

Deputies confirmed Mendoza-Galindo had sold the rings with the pawn shops, and a warrant to take custody of the property.

At the coin shop, it was confirmed he had received $1,130 for the Harrah’s ring, which was then melted down due to the “logo making it difficult to sell.” The second ring was melted as well.

At the jewelry and pawn shop, it was confirmed Mendoza-Galindo first pawned both rings on Aug. 4. He then recovered them from pawn on Aug. 9 and was awarded $100 for each ring.

Deputies spoke with the Trustee, who confirmed Mendoza-Galindo was her friend and handyman. She said he was a hard worker, and had done a lot of work around the properties included in the family trust.

Deputies asked if she gave him the rings or if she knew he had taken them. She said she gave no such authorization and was shocked to hear he had stolen and sold them.

Deputies made contact with Mendoza-Galindo, who admitted he had pawned them at the Jewelry store and then recovered and sold them at the coin store.

He said he and the Trustee were dating and after a night of drinking, she gave him both rings as a gift. He was taken to the Carson City Jail and booked.

The Trustee was asked again if she had given him the rings, or if she had any knowledge of him taking them. She repeated she never gave him the rings, and never drank with him due to his long history of drug and alcohol abuse.

He was charged with three counts of burglary; the first, stemming from his entry into the residence where he unlawfully took both gold rings. The second, for taking the stolen items to the jewelry and pawn shop where he obtained money under false pretenses for the stolen jewelry. The third, from selling the stolen rings again to the coin shop for cash, also obtaining money under false pretenses.

Bail: $60,000.

In other arrests:

— A 34-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 1800 block of E. Long Street late Thursday evening for domestic battery first, a misdemeanor, after allegedly attacking his mother before punching holes in the walls and attempting to break the windows of cars.

Deputies were dispatched to the residence on a report of a domestic battery.

A woman called stating her son was acting out of control, punching walls, and had hit her in the face. She stated she was able to lock the front door, locking the son outside. She said he continued to scream and yell outside and started walking towards E. Long.

A second anonymous reporting party called dispatch stating there was a male in the street screaming and yelling, who had took his shirt off and was attempting to break the windows to the vehicles parked in the parking lot.

Deputies observed the man walking in the street. As soon as he saw the patrol vehicle, he turned his back to the deputies, got down on his knees, and put his arms out to his side.

Due to his aggravated behavior and emotional state, deputies placed the man in handcuffs.

He was informed he was not under arrest, only detained. Deputies attempted to read the man his miranda rights several times, but the man continued to interrupt him.

The man said he wanted a public defender. Deputies did not ask him any questions, but the man began yelling that he’s upset with his mother and “is done with it.” He said he punched some holes in the walls, but that he lives there and he shouldn’t get in trouble for damaging his own stuff.

Deputies spoke with the mother, who was emotional and began to cry when they spoke with her. She said she had gone to bed and was in her bedroom when her son came home from drinking. She said ten minutes after he came home he began screaming and yelling.

She said he went into the bathroom and began tearing up the room, and ripped the toilet seat off.

She said he began yelling at her through the bedroom door demanding a cigarette. He became more agitated when she would not come out, his mother said, and began punching and kicking her door, creating a hole he kicked through.

She came out of the bedroom and told her son she was calling the cops because he “is acting out.” As she called 911, her son knocked her cellphone out of her hand with one hand and with his other, hit his mother on the left cheek of her face.

Deputies observed redness on her left cheek, which was consistent with a slap by a hand.

The man was arrested and on the transport to the jail, he kept saying he was done with his mother and done with everything, and promised he was going to get a gun at a pawn shop and blow his brains out. Due to his emotional state, deputies had jail staff meet them at the vehicle and take him inside. He was released to staff without further incident.

Bail: $3,137.

— A Carson City man was arrested in the 300 block of E. Adams Street Thursday evening on a charge of domestic battery after allegedly punching his girlfriend in the head after arguing about her sick granddaughter.

Deputies were dispatched to the residence on a report of a domestic battery after the victim’s brother called the police to report his sister had been punched in the head three times by her boyfriend.

Deputies made contact with the couple, who were standing outside of the residence when deputies arrived.

The victim told deputies she had gotten into an argument with her boyfriend. She said her granddaughter was sick and she was worried about her. She said her boyfriend accused her of overreacting about her granddaughter.

They then began arguing when he punched her in the head three times with his right fist, she told deputies.

The deputy reported that she had two lumps sticking off of her head. The deputy asked if she wanted medical attention and she said no.

Deputies spoke to the man who denied ever touching the woman, and that they had only argued.

Due to the injuries sustained on the woman’s face, the man was arrested for domestic battery and booked into the Carson City Jail without incident.

Bail: $3,137.

— An 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 1700 block of Brown Street Thursday evening on a charge of domestic battery first after a pair of twin brothers exchanged blows.

Deputies responded to a report of a domestic battery, and upon arrival, family members of the twins reported the brothers had gotten into a fist fight.

One brother was already gone when they arrived, but the second was still in the residence.

The man told deputies his brother had come into his room and started throwing his stuff on the floor. The man told his brother to stop, which lead to an argument.

The man said his brother told him multiple times “you won’t do s***,” so he punched his brother in the face. They then rolled around the room punching each other.

The man admitted he did not have any injuries, and admitted he landed the first blow which started the fight.

He was placed into custody for domestic battery.

The brother then arrived on scene and told deputies he had gone into the man’s room and moved some boxes so he could get some of his stuff. The man became angry and they started to argue. The brother confirmed the man punched him in the left side of the face and they began to fight. The brother did not show any signs of injury.

Bail: $3,137.

— A 29-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 1100 block of S. Roop Street early Friday morning for failing to appear on a traffic warrant.

Deputies were performing foot patrol in the area of N. Nevada Street and W. Proctor Street the they noticed a white Ford Expedition parked in the empty business parking lot in the area. The Ford’s headlights were illuminated and deputies could see smoke coming from the exhaust pipe of the vehicle.

After a short time, the vehicle drove out of the parking lot.

Deputies thought it was odd, and noted there were “relatively large items hanging from the rear view mirror that could obstruct the driver’s view.”

Deputies performed a traffic stop, and the passenger side tires of the Ford struck the curbing on the shoulder of the roadway as the vehicle yielded to a traffic stop.

Dispatch advised the Ford had a warrant attached to the license plates for the registered owner on a failure to appear for a traffic citation.

Deputies reported the man had a smell of alcohol coming from his breath as he spoke, and the man admitted to having “tow beers.”

However, he satisfactorily performed the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. He was then booked into custody for the warrant without incident and was transported to the Carson City Jail.

— A 30-year-old Carson City man was transported from the Elko Detention center to the Carson City Detention Center.

He was brought in on two warrants, the first of violating a suspended sentence, and the second for failing to appear, both misdemeanors.

Bail: $3,291 cash only.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

On April 24, 2024, at approximately 4:48 a.m., the Nevada State Police responded to a crash at the location of IR580 southbound near mile marker CC01 in Carson City, Nevada. (Near the Snyder Ave. overpass).

Each year, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosts an open house event as a way to connect families, deputies, non-profits and more. This year the event takes place May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Douglas County officials have announced that construction will begin soon on the first phase of the Muller Parkway Project. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Minden and Gardnerville, offering an alternative route to the main U.S. Route 395 through town. The decision comes as the County moves to fill its requirement to construct 2.4 miles of two-lane road by 2025.
