Lyon County Sheriff's Office warns of telephone scam circulating
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a phone scam that has been tricking people into believing they are in trouble with the local agency and demanding payment to get out of trouble.
The scammers pose as deputies of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and have told victims they either have missed a court date or have an outstanding warrant and then demand payment to clear the violation, said Michael Carlson, spokesman for LCSO.
The victims who do not answer their phone receive a call back number the provides instructions on how to automatically make a payment. The scammers have been identifying themselves as either Sgt. Tommy Smith or Capt. Dan Brown.
If you receive one of these calls or have suffered a loss as a result of this scam, call LCSO non-emergency line at 775-463-6620 to file a report.
