This Thanksgiving Day, community members open to receiving a warm holiday meal for themselves and their families are invited to join Friends In Service Helping at The Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Carson City.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Several fundraisers, including the annual “Share Your Christmas” Food Drive will be available throughout the Carson City, Minden and Reno areas on Friday. You can visit the North Pole safely as part of a drive-thru Santa's Village experience at V&T Railway in Carson City, beginning Friday into the weekend. The fourth annual Carson Valley Turkey Trot begins Friday and will be held virtually throughout the month of November. Retailers in Nevada and throughout the United States are ramping up hiring campaigns for the all-important holiday shopping season. In the Silver State, the Retail Association of Nevada estimates retailers will boost hiring by 4,700 positions during the holiday shopping period.

The Orchestra Program of Carson City School District is holding its Holiday Concert Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Just the idea of a concert in Carson City is exciting enough, but it gets even better because this musical event will cost audiences absolutely nothing except a little time and effort getting there. Admission is free.

The last Thursday of November means a big gobble gobble, Happy Thanksgiving to all. Enjoy in the games, festivities, activities at home and outdoors. Events are at a minimum, for obvious reasons, but the two big ones are traditions for us in the capital city. The final touches are in place as the Carson Nugget prepares for its annual Thanksgiving Day dinner Thursday, a Carson City tradition held for more than six decades.

The sixth annual Thanksgiving Day Carson City Turkey Trot is an event the entire family will enjoy and, for many families, it has become as much of a Thanksgiving Day tradition as the big meal itself.

The first significant snow-driven storms of the season remain on track to impact western Nevada and Sierra midday Tuesday through Wednesday, coinciding with one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Motorists are advised that if they can do it, they should finish travel over the Sierra by Tuesday morning to avoid long delays and highway travel headaches.

For over six decades, the Carson City Nugget has fed the community a free Thanksgiving Feast. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, pie, and more are all served up by local volunteers including those from FISH, the Carson City Board of Supervisors, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, and dozens of cheerful community members lending a helping hand.

Hello fellow anglers. This time of year, I personally wish that it would stay daylight savings time. The morning we had the time change, Tom Blotter and I decided to venture up to Frenchman’s Lake for a little fishing activity. We had a long discussion on what would be the right time to meet in the morning to leave. Would it be 3 AM new time or 4 PM old time.  We left at 4 AM and got there in total darkness not prepared, I did not bring a flash light or a head light. Quite comically we prepped the boat using the light from our phones, then waited until we had enough light to safely launch. We fished until 2 pm to make sure we got home before dark.

Registration is now open for the the 2019 Carson City Turkey Trot, a local holiday tradition where hundreds of runners and walkers, some dressed in Thanksgiving costumes, get in a good fitness workout ahead of their respective family afternoon holiday feasts.

On Thanksgiving Day almost forty years ago, a mentally ill woman carried out what would today be considered a terrorist attack on the streets of Reno.

Good day Carson City and Happy Thanksgiving. Today is Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018. With the arrival of this festival day of feast, family, friendship and thanks, Mother Nature delivered valley rain and Sierra snow overnight. Gusty winds are expected later this afternoon. This morning appears to be in between weather systems, which is good news for those headed to the Governor's Mansion for the annual Turkey Trot. It may be soggy, but not heavy on the rain side.
