Law enforcement looks for those who 'fake it' in 'Click it or Ticket' seatbelt campaign
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office along with other law enforcement agencies throughout the state will be participating in Joining Forces through the rest of the month of November. The focus of the event will be seatbelt safety “Click it or Ticket."
It’s important to buckle up, every trip, every time, no matter the distance of the drive. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 52 percent of car crashes occur within a five-mile radius of a motorist’s home and nearly 70 percent happen within 10 miles from home. Wearing a seat belt doubles motorists’ and passengers’ chances of surviving a crash.
During this Joining Forces enforcement campaign, officers will be looking for drivers who “fake it” by rushing to click their belt into place when pulled over for another offense. Faking it won’t protect lives.
The intent of the Joining Forces campaign is to educate the motoring public about the importance of buckling up.
Grant Funding for this event is provided by the Nevada Department of Public Safety-Office of Traffic Safety. These monies are used to pay overtime for additional deputies who will be out looking for drivers and passengers who are not wearing their seatbelts when stopped for traffic violations.
Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program that promotes statewide enforcement in the areas of DUI, distracted driving, seat belt use, speeding and pedestrian safety. The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness about the dangers of making poor choices while driving.
