Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra fishing report

Hello fellow anglers, fishing season is coming to an end in some areas. In California, this will be your last weekend to fish many rivers and streams. On Nov. 16, the majority of rivers and streams in California will be officially closed for the season.

This will include all lakes in the Inyo and Mono County region. I spoke with a good friend and fellow angler Tom last Wednesday night. Tom will be headed up to Twin Lakes to get in some last minute fishing before the season ends. I wish him well an expect to see pictures and of course a few fish stories. A reminder that some areas have already closed for fishing for the year, this would include all streams that lead into Lake Tahoe.

Speaking of Lake Tahoe, this is a great time to get out and fish for mackinaw trout. I have seen more larger fish come out of Lake Tahoe in November and December than any other month. Top lining F13 or an F18 Rapala in 30 to 75 feet of water is a fight you can never forget. My favorite areas are from Camp Richardson to a mile or two past the mouth of Emerald Bay. If you never fished lake Tahoe, I would highly recommend a sport fishing guide. Not only to get you on the fish, but for safety reasons.

If you are not familiar with the lake and wind conditions, a good trip can change into a nightmare real fast. Last Sunday Krey was with Captain Scotty on the Hopper I. They were trolling in front of Ski Run Marina, he was trolling with a flasher and a live minnow and caught a nice 8 pound mackinaw. Many of the captains from Tahoe Sportfishing have been doing well for good sized mackinaws over the last couple weeks. For more information call Tahoe Sportfishing at 530-541-5448.

CAPLES LAKE:
The resort has closed the marina and general store for the season. The Eldorado County boat ramp is also closed for the season. They received some good snow from our last storm. The lake level was at 12 feet down from the full level as of Oct. 30. If you can brave the cold, this is a good time of year to fish for browns and mackinaws. I personally can't wait for ice fishing to get started. They have been averaging low 20's for the over night temperatures. They do have cabin rentals available during the season. CARSON RIVERS, CALIFORNIA:
The water flows are up and the water is clear. If you are fishing this weekend, I would recommend the east fork. I would also recommend to to do a little walking with two poles. I keep a Panther Martin silver spinner on one and the other with a split shot and some salmon eggs. A few reports from anglers that fished most of the day and caught a couple small rainbows. The section from Hangmans bridge to the Nevada state line is open all year with special regulations. Artificial lures or flies only with a barbless hook and Zero limit. all fish must be returned unharmed back to the river. INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR:
The lake level is still up and the weeds are almost a thing of the past. I fished the lake two weeks ago and was very happy to be able to cast a lure with out removing weeds on every cast. I caught one 13 inch rainbow and lost a couple others. Use caution when driving in on the highway 89 side of the lake. The road is not plowed and can be very icy, here I would recommend the entrance from Diamond Valley Road. With our cooling temperatures and clear waters, fishing should start to pick up a little.

ROAD CLOSURES FOR ALPINE COUNTY:
Blue Lakes, Burnside lake, Woods Lake, Highland lakes, Silver Hill, Forestdale.

TOPAZ LAKE:
Fishing season will open on Jan. 1, 2016. The Topaz Lodge has not released any information on the derby for the new year. I will also let you know if the Douglas County Park ramp or the Topaz Landing marina will be accessible for opening day. The Nevada Department of Fish and Wildlife has planted over 10,000 pounds of trout since the lake closed this season.
