Carson City crime log: Arrests made for vehicle burglary, battery by prisoner

Two transients were arrested Saturday for suspicion of felony vehicle burglary and other charges, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Julius Rafael Lugo, 24, and Ashleigh Marie Minugh, 25, were taken into custody in the 3300 block of Highway 50 East.

Lugo faces felony charges of vehicle burglary and tampering with a motor vehicle. He also faces misdemeanor charges of trespassing and two counts probation violation.

Minugh faces a felony charge of vehicle burglary, tampering with a motor vehicle and misdemeanor trespassing.

According to the arrest report, a deputy was dispatched to a motor vehicle dealership in the 3700 block of Highway 50 East. Dispatch advised the owners of the lot found a male and female inside of one the cars and told them to leave. The owners provided descriptions of the pair.

It was learned during the investigation that the couple allegedly broke into the vehicle and were sleeping inside, leaving behind trash and food, blankets and shoes. A stereo in the vehicle was also missing. The owner of the lot wished to pursue charges against the two. Both were arrested on the above charges. Bail for Lugo: $46,352. Bail for Minugh: $40,352.

In other arrests:
— A 26-year-old inmate at Carson City Jail was booked for felony suspicion of battery by a prisoner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Tara Lyn Abernathy faces the felony charge after deputies reviewed video of an altercation involving she and another inmate. She was observed grabbing the inmate’s neck after being provoked.

Deputies spoke with the suspect and asked for her side of the story. Abernathy said she has had a problem with the inmate due to an incident with the inmate’s boyfriend while outside the jail. She explained that the inmate pushed her limits, and she “blacked out” and grabbed the other female inmate.

The victim inmate said she and the suspect have been having problems since she had been moved into the female general population part of jail. Bail: $20,000.

— A 19-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 5:03 p.m. in the area of 20 College Parkway for misdemeanor suspicion of domestic battery.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called to an apartment regarding a report of domestic battery.

They met with the victim who explained she and her son got into an argument, she was pushed and fell to her bed. She advised her son has anger and mental health issues and needs help. Deputies observed holes in the wall and bedroom door.

Deputies spoke with the suspect who advised he and his mother got into an argument and during the argument, she got into his space twice and so he pushed her and then threw clothes at her. She admitted he has anger issues and wants help. He was arrested for suspicion of domestic battery. Bail: $3,137.

— A 48-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Sunday, 3:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Minnesota Street for a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued out of Churchill County. Bail: $500.

— A 30-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 5:22 p.m. in the 1100 block of Glacier Drive for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI. According to the arrest report, deputies were called after a witness reported a possible DUI driver.

The witness followed the man from the area of Mills Park and advised he observed the man swerving, and the hitting a curb as he turned onto Airport Road. The witness said the suspect ran two stop signs. He said he observed the man get out of his vehicle on Glacier Drive, stumbling.

A deputy arrived at the residence and knocked on the garage door after hearing voices in the garage. The man came out of the garage, had a noticeable sway, heavy slurred speech, red eyes and smelled of alcohol. He was told by the deputy that a witness reported him as a possible DUI driver.

The man was asked if he would participate in field sobriety tests. He said he would not. He was asked if he would submit to a preliminary breath tests. The man agreed and blew a sample of .299. He was arrested and taken to the hospital due to the high level of intoxication. Bail: $1,137.

— A 24-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 9:04 p.m. in the 2000 block of Lone Mountain for two misdemeanor violation of suspended sentence warrants. Bail $6,000.

— A 41-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 3:13 a.m. in the area of Carson and Eighth Street for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI.

According to the arrest report, a deputy observed a Jeep failing to maintain its lane of travel multiple times. Dispatch alerted the registration on the vehicle had expired in August 2017.

During the traffic stop the deputy observed the man showing signs of that he had been drinking include a light odor of alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle. He was asked if he had consumed any alcohol. The man replied no. He then replied had two beers after the deputy advised him of his observation.

The man agreed to participate in field sobriety tests. He provided a preliminary breath test of .166. At jail he consented to evidentiary tests of .146 and .140. Bail: $1,137.

— A 56-year-old transient was arrested Saturday, 08:18 a.m. in the 400 block of East William Street for a misdemeanor violation of probation warrant and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $4,137.

— A 24-year-old Carson City woman was booked into jail Saturday, 10:15 a.m. for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued May 6, 2016 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $3,000.

— A 38-year-old Reno woman was booked into Carson City Jail at 10:15 a.m. for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued Sept. 29, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $5,000.

A suspect who allegedly made violent threats against an elementary school in Sonoma County, Calif. was arrested at Lake Tahoe on Monday evening. Earlier in the day, detectives with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect, Kevin Harrington, 47, of Santa Rosa, was likely in the South Lake Tahoe area.

Carson City resident Brett Fisher took these photos of the rare celestial visitor Comet A3, also known as C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, that arrived this week over the skies across Nevada and throughout the world.

A gas leak was repaired Thursday and there is not an active leak, according to a Southwest Gas spokesman. It is unknown at this time when the portion of backcountry trail will reopen. We will update when it does.

A portion of the Spooner Lake State Park backcountry is closed until further notice due to an ongoing gas leak, according to Nevada State Parks in a social media post Monday.

Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing Thursday night into Friday morning, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a freeze watch.
