Carson City area road report for week of Nov. 1-7

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Nov. 1-7, 2021. Closures are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:

— Curry Street between 5th Street and Musser Street will be closed in the northbound direction, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for road construction. Pedestrian closures and detours will also be in place. Please plan accordingly.

— Kings Canyon Road west of Longview Way remains closed 7 days a week, all day, for roadway reconstruction. Only local residential access will be provided. The Waterfall Trailhead and parking area is closed. There is no access and no parking for the trails. Please do not come up Kings Canyon unless you live in the area.

Lane restrictions are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:

— Caroline Street between Nevada Street and Mountain Street will have roadway work, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm for survey and other project preparation activities.

— Clear Creek Road will have lane adjustments and closures between S. Carson Street and Vista Grande Boulevard for striping modifications, Monday and Tuesday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

— Long Street between Roop Street and Rand Street will be reduced to one lane with flaggers, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for roadway reconstruction. Please expect delays and consider an alternate route.

— Marian Avenue at Long Street will be flagger controlled, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for roadway reconstruction. Please expect delays and consider an alternate route.

— Molly Street at Long Street will be flagger controlled, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for roadway reconstruction. Please expect delays and consider an alternate route.

— Saliman Road at the intersection of Long Street will be flagger controlled, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for roadway reconstruction. Please expect delays and consider an alternate route.

— Sonoma Street between S. Carson Street and Silver Sage Drive may have lane restrictions and closures, Monday through Friday, all day for water and sewer utility work.

— State Street at Long Street will be flagger controlled, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for roadway reconstruction. Please expect delays and consider an alternate route.

The Carson City Photo Club announced this month's winners of its monthly photo contest. The club meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Carson City Sheriff's Office. All levels of photographers are welcome. The theme addressed by this month's winners was "Food."

A 29 year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday night at 7:42 p.m. in the 3200 block of Market Street for suspicion of felony attempted burglary, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.

This year, Leadership class has determined the theme will be Winterflix, a play on the popular Netflix streaming service that allows customers to watch a wide variety of award-winning TV shows, movies, documentaries, and more on thousands of internet-connected devices.

Sunday should be a great day to be out and about, so come to the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation’s open house at the Wungnema House, Sunday afternoon from 2-5 p.m. There is no admission fee, and all are welcome.

Anyone who lives near wilderness ought to know that wildlife comes with the territory.

Wild critters are no strangers to the front and back yards of Carson City residents. They also know their way around the streetscape pretty well, too.

Perhaps the only thing better than a dip in the swimming pool is a dip in one with a refreshed, like-new look.

Recently a reader asked me about growing hemp. According to Penn State Extension, hemp was often found in early settlements and used as a fiber source. It was widely grown in Pennsylvania and other states in the 1700s and 1800s. Not only grown for fiber, its oil was used “in paints, ink, varnishes, and lamp oil.” Conestoga wagon covers and clothing were made from hemp.
