Weather systems to drop temperatures in the region; snow possible at Lake Tahoe
Another change in the skies over Carson City, Western Nevada, Lake Tahoe and the Sierra is in the forecast this week, according to the National Weather Service.
After a Nevada Day weekend of blue skies and warm weather a cold front will move into the area late Monday giving way to cooler temperatures in the valleys and a chance of snow in the Sierra on Tuesday. Later in the week, a colder and wetter system will move through the region, with possible periods of heavy snow for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, according to the weather service.
The first system to arrive by Monday night and early Tuesday is expected to lower temperatures between 15 to 25 degrees. High temperatures across Western Nevada on Tuesday will struggle to reach the lower 50s, while in the Sierra and Lake Tahoe regions high temperatures is expected to hover around 40. The cold front may bring a brief period of showers, with snow levels dropping to around 5,000 feet. The system won't have an abundance of moisture with it, according to the weather service.
The next system, meanwhile, will push into the region on Thursday into Thursday night and may bring gusty winds and some periods of heavy snow to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. The system is expected to move quickly through the region and therefore may not produce "overly significant" amounts of snow, the weather service states. For lower elevations, rain may change to snow Thursday night with a light accumulation possible mainly north of Highway 50.
