Carson City School Board hosts 23rd American Citizen Essay Contest

The Carson City School District’s Board of Trustees is pleased to sponsor the 23nd Annual American Citizen Essay Contest. Completed essays are due to the Carson City School District at 1402 West King Street no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024.

The annual contest began in 2002 to honor the memory and events of September 11, 2001. A fund has been established by the Carson City Board of Trustees, which will celebrate and give a cash award for students at each level: elementary, middle school, and high school.

Any public, charter, private or home-schooled student in Carson City may participate in the contest. The essay should be no longer than five (5) pages and may be as short as the student desires. The essay may be handwritten or typed.

Essays will be judged within each grade level as follows: adherence to the topic, originality of thought and use of the traits of writing (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions). The topic for this year is the following:

“The Pledge of Allegiance mentions that our nation is indivisible. Considering divisions within our society today, what steps can you take to create unity?”

Winners will be publicly announced at the Nov. 12, 2024 school board meeting. There will be winners for each level including elementary school, middle school and high school. Each winner will receive the following cash prizes. First-place winners will also be asked to read their essay during the school board meeting.

First Place: $100

Second Place: $50

Third Place: $30

The first page of the essay must include the student’s name (first and last), his or her age, grade, telephone number, teacher’s name and school.

East Fork Fire Protection and Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded Monday morning to the area south of Johnson Lane near Heybourne Road for a report of an airplane crash.

The Davis Fire is now 85 percent contained, having burned 5,824 acres, fire officials said in a Monday morning briefing.

UPDATE 5:15PM: Fire crews knocked down the fire in the 300 block of Arthur Drive, which was initially reported to the fire department as being on Silver Sage Drive.

The fire was caused by an overheated mechanical wood splitter that had been turned off after having been in use, according to Carson City Battalion Chief Jon Pedrini. There was no extension to the home and the fire stayed in a wood pile. Due to windy conditions, firefighting efforts were stepped up before it began to spread.

Pedrini noted that the homeowner, who had been splitting wood, was not at fault and that he had turned off the splitter and stepped inside briefly, when the overheated machinery ignited, causing the fire.

What a week! The Davis Fire has been a horrible reminder of what a high fire hazard area we live in. Today (Sept. 12), we have power again after three days without, but the winds were so strong there (was) a red flag warning with the added weight of “Particularly Dangerous Situation.”

The countdown continues as we are one week away from Dayton Valley Days, a two-day outdoor street festival where friends and families come together to celebrate in the historic downtown area. Now in its 35th year, the festival will be held in Old Town Dayton on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21-22 starting at 8:30 a.m. It's the largest to date with over 140 vendors expected to line Pike Street.

A day of free family fun for the community is planned in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Bob Boldrick Theater located at the Carson City Community Center.
