Carson City residents answer the call, donate hundreds of household items to local veterans
When the Sierra-Tahoe Unit-137 of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association asked for donations in an inaugural “drive by” collection Saturday for homeless veterans recently placed in housing, Carson City residents answered the call.
Hundreds of slightly used and new household items filling more than a hundred boxes were collected Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Hall on 2nd and Curry Street. The “Drive by Car Hop” exceeded all expectations, organizers say.
“With something new like this it was either going to be slow going or super busy, and today we were super busy,” said Brenda Horton, vice president of the Ladies Auxiliary Fleet Reserve Association Unit 137, one of the many volunteers who organized the event.
“People came with televisions, microwaves, crockpots, new pots and pans, laundry detergent, soaps, toothpaste, you name it,” she said. “One woman came in and said she bought $100 worth of items to give. The outpouring from Carson City has been tremendous.”
The donated items will be sorted and then taken to the Veterans Resource Center, said Horton.

Meanwhile, Operation Sweaters for Veterans is underway. On Nov. 11, Americans throughout the world will commemorate Veterans Day to thank our nation’s veterans for service given and sacrifices made to protect the freedoms of this nation.
In conjunction with more than a thousand Veterans & Family Memorial Care Providers nationwide, Walton’s Funerals & Cremations is sponsoring the VFMC Operation Sweaters for Veterans initiative throughout Northern Nevada and Susanville.
Now through Veterans Day, Walton’s is collecting new or gently used sweaters and gloves for men and women, which will be distributed to local veterans and their families.
“This is just one small way we can support our heroes, and we’re honored to do our part,” said Tammy Dermody, owner of Walton’s. New or gently used sweaters can be dropped off at Walton’s location in Carson City and Gardernville:
— Walton's Funerals & Cremations - Chapel of the Valley, 1281 North Roop St., Carson City
— Walton's Funerals & Cremations - Gardnerville, 1521 Church St., Gardnerville
In addition, Walton’s is the Official Cell Phones for Soldiers drop off center. People are invited to bring in their old cell phones to recycle and convert into One Hour of Free Talk time for our heroes overseas. Everyone in the community is invited to support our veterans and military heroes by donating sweaters, gloves and old cell phones at Walton’s.
