RGJ columnist Katie Coombs to speak at Carson City Chamber luncheon
The German writer, poet, and statesman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is attributed to declaring, “A man’s manners are a mirror in which he shows his portrait.” To date, no other form of communication shows the world the type of manners a man possesses than social media posts.
While social media is today’s preferred method of reaching out to express opinions, feelings, and to stay connected, it has a very dark side. Posting angry words, untruths, or getting even with someone you don’t like can create consequences not anticipated and could turn on the author.
All too often we hear news stories about the bullies who post negatively on various social media sites causing great distress and sometimes harm to the body and psyche of the person to whom the slander is directed. Much of the post may be fictional to discredit or “get even” but with the gang mentality that prevails in society, few readers bother to check the facts or confront the bully — or defend the accused.
As a society, we prefer negativity and that is what sells papers and catches our attention on news shows. The media has it right – put a negative spin on a story and you’ve got everyone’s attention. Even people who know better can be seduced.
Well before the advent of social media, American moral and social philosopher and author, Eric Hoffer, wrote, “Rudeness is the weak man’s imitation of strength.” That’s a mighty powerful statement.
The Chamber is pleased to present well-known and engaging Reno Gazette Journal “Uncommon Sense” journalist, author, entrepreneur and married mother of seven, Katie Coombs, to address those who attend the November 9th Soup’s On! luncheon at the Gold Dust West beginning at 11:30 a.m.
If you have read Coombs’ column, you will have gathered she is an old soul, though only 45. She writes, “I like to share knowledge and advice focusing on family values and leadership for parents through the simple use of commons sense.”
She likes to create conversations and does so through her RGJ column, hosting a radio show, writing for magazines, blogging, authoring books on various topics, and engaging audiences on her many speaking assignments. She doesn’t shy away from political discussions and is an advocate of logical thinking and self-respect and is concerned about the effects of social media on society.
She has entitled her presentation, “How Social Media has Hijacked our Manner and Our Minds.” The luncheon is open to all by calling in a reservation at 882-1565 prior to November 6. Cost is $16 per person.
