What Works: Your Voice Has Power
Do you ever get stuck in your head? Like, so stuck the words to express your feelings don’t come out? If you are like many, your head is busy calculating. The heart is getting impatient. The gut is on the verge of sick from anticipation. There’s one great action you can take to stop the inner tug of war and find out the truth about your situation. Use your voice.
Use of the voice, or not, is directly linked to one of two things – fear or love. We speak or don’t speak because of fear of the outcome. We speak or don’t speak because of the love we have for a person, or situation, or topic. Unfortunately, when the fear of the outcome is greater than the conviction we have, our voices tend to go a little mute. A major fear behind not using our voice is that we won’t be understood, or worse, we will be misunderstood.
Have you faced a situation like this? This formula, fear of outcome > conviction = silence, is a blocker of bonding, action, and progress.
The first thing you need to understand is, your voice has power. Once you speak about something, it gains momentum. The more you speak about it, the more people can step up to offer support. Your belief is confirmed or denied. Your voice is flint that sparks the fire of truth. No longer are you paddling about in your head. When you speak, you make it real.
This is where the fear pops in. Making it real means there’s a real outcome. There’s either acceptance, discussion, or a consequence. This fear of outcome is where our good old “frenemy” passive-aggressive communication comes in. Hints, testing, feigned ambivalence, all these are actions backed by intention which take the back door to getting to the point.
When we care about a person or an outcome, sometimes the actions we take are based on the reactions we think others will have. When we take a deep breath and use our voice, it’s amazing what can happen.
A single voice can spark a movement. A chorus of voices can keep that movement going. A single voice can open the door to vulnerability. A duo of voices can strengthen a relationship. Intention is nothing without action. The use of a voice is part of that action.
What have you been staying silent about, in your business, at work, with your spouse, or in your other relationships? Is there a community issue you are concerned about brewing in the depths of your mind? I challenge you to break the silence this week and let go of the outcome. Step into your truth with your voice. Only then can you feel the true magnitude of how powerful you are.
