Motorcycle rider dies in crash near Carson City freeway ramp following brief pursuit
An adult male motorcycle rider who failed to yield for officers during a brief pursuit, died in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning near the I-580 ramp at North Carson Street after losing control and flipping the bike, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
The name of the 55-year-old Carson City rider has not been released pending notification of family members. The crash is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol. No officers were injured.
The incident happened at around 3:40 a.m. when an officer observed the motorcycle rider pass Roop and Beverly streets traveling at a high rate of speed and failing to maintain a lane of traffic.
The officer turned on their lights and siren at around Roop and Winnie streets. The rider failed to stop and sped away going from Roop Street to westbound College Parkway to North Carson Street.
The officer alerted dispatch to contact Nevada Highway Patrol and Washoe County authorities when the rider entered north Carson Street headed toward the freeway. Officers had lost sight of him in a road construction zone on Lakeview Hill. As patrol units searched the area more thoroughly, at approximately 3:46 a.m., they discovered the crash location and adult male driver, who had died at the scene, said Furlong.
The rider apparently lost control after attempting to enter the I-580 ramp, where he flipped and was thrown from the motorcycle, said Furlong. This accident is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol, at the request of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. Northbound traffic flow from Carson Street to I-580 remains closed (re-routed) for accident reconstruction efforts.
The Nevada Highway Patrol is the investigating agency. A section of northbound Carson Street was closed as part of the investigation.
