206 Acres of Carson City Trails and Open Space Acquired for Public Benefit
206 acres between Ash Canyon and Vicee Canyon have recently been purchased from Gerald and Luanna Hamm by Carson City, with funds from the Carson City Quality of Life – Open Space Fund and the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).
The acquisition was facilitated by Nevada Land Trust (NLT), a nonprofit conservation land trust dedicated to protecting special places for future generations. Nevada Land Trust has been partnering with Carson City for several years, assisting with such projects as Carson River Canyon to protect a three-mile stretch along the Carson River in 2015.
“Nevada Land Trust works closely with landowners and communities to protect open space that is important to all of us, and we are happy to have been part of this effort,” said NLT Board Chair Karen Ross.
Identified as high priority parcels for public acquisition in the Carson City Open Space Plan and in the Eagle Valley Trails Committee’s inventory and needs assessment report, the Hamm parcels provide critical connections to the City’s trail system. A standing-room-only crowd of supporters turned out in February to encourage the Open Space Advisory Committee to recommend the acquisition and approval of the LWCF grant request to the Board of Supervisors, which they did on September 6. LWCF is a National Park Service-affiliated program administered in Nevada by the Nevada Division of State Parks.
During the September Board of Supervisors meeting, Mayor Crowell said the following: “To all those folks out there who wanted to make this happen for several years, congratulations to all of you. It’s a big part of Carson City. This just shows that if you don’t take care of your open space and hillsides, you’re going to lose that beautiful view that we have. When you wake up in the morning and look out at the mountains, somehow it makes you feel a little better. We’ll keep it that way.”
“I’ve never been out on the property when there haven’t been folks out running, hiking, or biking,” commented Carson City Open Space Administrator Ann Bollinger. “It’s a keystone property that connects to other trails, and I’m grateful we haven’t lost something so well-loved and well-used as this land is,” Bollinger concluded.
A celebration is planned at the property off Ash Canyon Road at 1pm Friday afternoon with Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, City Supervisors, NLT Trustees, members of the Carson City Open Space Advisory Committee, and other project supporters. The public is welcome to attend. For more information, please contact the Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Department at (775) 887-2262
