Carson City deputies make arrests for drugs, warrants, home invasion

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team arrested a man Friday who had four outstanding felony warrants including one for burglary, a sheriff’s deputy said.

Chance Higby Banta was taken into custody at 8:36 p.m. in the 3300 block of Highway 50 East.

According to the arrest report a SET deputy patrolling in an unmarked car observed the man walking in a parking lot. The deputy had known the man through prior contacts and knew he had active warrants issued out of Carson City District Court for his arrest.

The deputy made contact with Banta who kept denying his identity, while moving his head from side to side and saying: “I’m not Chance. What are you talking about,” the arrest report states.

The officer went to detain the man who then pulled away and attempted to run. The deputy took him to the ground and with the help of other officers we’re able to apply handcuffs, the arrest report states.

The warrants were for felony burglary, issued Sept. 8, violation of bail conditions, Aug. 29, contempt of court, Aug. 30, each out of Carson City this year. There was a felony failure to appear warrant issued Sept. 13, 2017 out of Washoe County. He is being held without bail in lieu of a hearing.

In other arrests:
— Two men were arrested Friday for felony drug charges, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Marcus Estrada, 23, and Jacob Watts, 20, were arrested Friday, 10:22 p.m. in the 1900 block of North Carson Street for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, (methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia. Watts also faces a parole and probation violation charge. He was held without bail in lieu of a hearing. Bail for Estrada: $3,637.

— A 32-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Saturday, 10:26 p.m. in the area of Rock Court and Gordon Street for a misdemeanor violation of a suspended sentence warrant. Bail: $3,000.

— A 43-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 10:53 a.m. in the area of Spooner Drive and Carriage Crest for a misdemeanor failure to appear traffic warrant. Bail: $315.

— A 25-year-old Carson City man was booked into jail Saturday, 8:20 a.m. for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued Sept. 26 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $500.

— A 49-year-old Carson City man, Thomas Borst, was arrested Saturday, 6:43 p.m. in the area of East Adams and North Stewart Street for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of a suspended sentence and no proof of insurance. Bail $5,374.

— A 28-year-old Carson City man, Nicholas Addison Kelly, was arrested Sunday, 1:19 a.m. in the 300 block of North Carson Street for a felony parole and probation violation.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called to the location regarding a fight. The man provided a sheriff’s office sergeant an ID card which was run and showed he was on parole and probation with two conditions: Not to drink and not to be in a bar, the arrest report states.

The man told deputies he had four beers. He provided a preliminary breath test of .145 and was arrested for violating his probation. He was held without bail in lieu of a hearing.

— A transient was arrested Sunday, 2:28 a.m. in the area of Northgate Lane and College Parkway for misdemeanor misuse of 911 and being an intoxicated pedestrian. Bail: $2,709.

— A 22-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 5:59 a.m. in the area of 20 College Parkway for gross misdemeanor possession of a dangerous drug (Alprazolam) without a prescription. Bail: $2,500.

— A 54-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Sunday, 8:50 a.m. in the 4100 block of Furnace Creek for a misdemeanor violation of a suspended sentence warrant issued Oct. 10 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $3,000.

— An 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 6:47 p.m. in the 2700 block of Gardner Drive for misdemeanor suspicion of domestic battery. Bail: $3,137.

— A 21-year-old transient was arrested Sunday, 7:31 a.m. in the 2000 block of Lone Mountain for a misdemeanor warrant of violation of a suspended sentence. Bail: $3,000.

— A 22-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 10:03 p.m. for two misdemeanor warrant, driving with suspended registration, no proof of insurance and speeding. Bail: $1,491.

— A 25-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Monday for felony suspicion of home invasion and misdemeanor domestic battery, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Evan Joseph McWilliams was taken into custody at 1:24 a.m. in the 2500 block of Grant Street.

According to the arrest report, a deputy was called to the area Sunday, 11:26 p.m. regarding a domestic dispute. Prior to arrival the male involved in the dispute had fled the home and was last seen walking in the area of Grant Street.

The deputy made contact with the victim who would not provide information as to what happened. The male involved was not located and the victim showed no signs indicating a battery occurred, the arrest report states.

Early Monday deputies were dispatched back to the residence after the victim told dispatch the man had forcefully made entry into the home through the backyard door, the arrest report states.

A deputy arrived and located McWilliams standing on the corner of Silver Sage and Pat Lane. He told deputies he was involved in an argument with the female victim earlier and returned to get his car keys. He said the woman refused to let him into the home so he kicked the back door and forcefully made entry into the home, the arrest report states.

The man had minor bruising and discoloration on the left side of his face above his left eye. He told the officer at some point during the argument he thought the victim struck him but he wasn’t sure, the arrest report states. The victim said the man pushed her and she may have punched him in the face but wasn’t exactly sure what happened.

There was confirmed damage to the back door. The man was booked for suspicion of felony home invasion and misdemeanor domestic battery. Bail: $28,137.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.

Six local bowlers were inducted in the third class of the Carson Country Bowling Association Hall of Fame at their annual meeting on Saturday, April 27, at HomeGrown Bowl. Carson Country is the local association of the U.S. Bowling Congress.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will hold a "Sheep Talk" this Monday, April 29 from noon to 1 p.m. so residents can learn from Carson City staff about the popular fuel reduction program used annually with the use of "firefighting" sheep.
