Western Nevada College president Lucey hailed as 'heart and soul' who fought for Northern Nevada higher education
Western Nevada College President Carol Lucey announced that she is retiring from her post Wednesday, following more than 14 years at the helm of the Carson City and Northern Nevada-based college system. The announcement followed an earlier notice to the college community in the summer in which she relayed her intention to retire at some point during the 2013-14 academic year.
Pursuant to Board of Regents Policy, Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Daniel Klaich has designated WNC Vice President of Finance and Administrative Services Chet Burton as the Officer in Charge for WNC.
Chancellor Klaich said he will work with the NSHE Board of Regents to start the presidential search process. Lucey sent a message Wednesday announcing her departure to all college faculty and staff, as well as members of the college’s three community advisory boards. She also thanked them for the steady progress they helped to make possible at WNC during her tenure. You can see the message below.
Burton conveyed his appreciation for all of the contributions over the past decade and a half that Lucey brought to WNC. “She poured her heart and soul into the college and thousands of students have benefited from the education they received at Western during her tenure," he said. “Throughout the seven counties of Nevada that the college serves, she sought to improve the lives of all the residents of Northwest Nevada and further the economic development and growth of the region.”
During Lucey’s presidency, the college brought important new degree and certification programs to the college, and strengthened college partnerships with local businesses, manufacturers, state agencies, and K-12 education.
"Dr. Lucey has provided a solid foundation on which to continue serving the bright young women and men passing through the doors of Western,” Burton said. “They are the keys to our future and we must never lose sight of that fact. We will continue to do everything we can to support and assist them in furthering their education and reaching their career goals."
