Carson City arrests: Man jailed for assault after allegedly swinging board at employer

A 51-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday for felony suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after fighting with the person who hired him to work on his house, swinging a board at him and breaking windows, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

William Charles Gray was taken into custody at 5:50 p.m. in the 600 block of North Carson Street. He also faces a gross misdemeanor charge of destruction of property. According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to locate a male subject who had battered a casino security guard. While deputies were on the call, dispatch received a second call from a man in the 400 block of North Curry Street who said Gray had been working at his home, was drunk and causing problems.

A deputy located the suspect on Carson Street near the Nevada State Museum. While speaking with him the officer could smell an odor of alcohol. The man told the officer he was buzzed and not drunk and said he went to lunch and had a drink at a casino.

Deputies went to the casino and spoke with security who advised the man got into a fight with a guard but that they did not want to press charges, the arrest report states. Security gave officers the suspect’s ID and debit card.

Deputies interviewed the victim at the Curry Street location who advised that the suspect had been hired to work on his house and had left for lunch around noon. When he returned at 5 p.m. he saw that Gray was drunk and told him to stop working for the day.

The victim said Gray then walked over to a bar and then returned to his backyard and began to make a commotion. The victim said he told Gray to leave. The victim said the man then swung a 10-foot long, 2x2 board at him, missing his face within four inches.

The victim said he carries a pistol on his hip and drew the weapon at the man to create separation while he went inside the nearby bar to call 911. While the suspect was in the backyard, the victim said he returned to see two windows, valued at around $1,400, that were broken, the arrest report states.

Gray was arrested and taken to jail. He refused to answer questions and called the arresting deputy a racially charged word approximately 40 times. Bail: $22,500.

In other arrests:
— A 25-year-old Carson City man, Gabriel Renteria, was arrested Thursday, 9:01 p.m. in the 3100 block of Halleck street on a felony warrant alleging home invasion and two misdemeanor warrants: violation of a temporary protection order and petit larceny. Bail:$25,000.

— A 29-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Friday in the 1000 block of North Saliman Road on suspicion of DUI second offense and driving without insurance.
According to the arrest report, a deputy was dispatched for an unwanted subject to a casino in the 2200 block of William Street.

Dispatch then advised the man was seen leaving the casino in a brown Buick. The officer observed the vehicle and followed it from Willian and Humboldt streets, making a traffic stop at Saliman Road apartment complex driveway. The officer made contact with the man who identified himself and said he didn’t do anything wrong at the casino, the arrest report states.

The man had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and had difficulty retrieving his license from his wallet. The officer asked the man if he would be willing to submit to field sobriety tests. The man refused, stating he would not pass the tests, according to the arrest report. He provided a breath sample with a .210 partial sample and was taken into custody. At jail he was read the request for voluntary evidence. He could not decide after being asked several times. A telephonic search warrant was applied and granted by a judge and a blood draw was administered. He was booked on suspicion of DUI second offense. He had a prior DUI conviction in 2014. Bail: $3,374.
