High Speed fiber is coming to Virginia City, bringing reliable connection to its residents for the first time
Storey County is excited to announce the installation of its first Fiber Distribution Box, a major milestone in the County’s efforts to bring high-speed fiber internet connectivity to Virginia City.
To celebrate this achievement, the County will host a ribbon-cutting event on October 16th at 10 a.m. at 800 S. C Street, Virginia City. Community members, business owners, and media are invited to attend this event, which will highlight the importance of this project for the region’s future.
This new development will enable virtually every home, business, and County building in the area to access reliable, high-speed fiber connections. The distribution box is strategically located near the IT Department and the AT&T distribution point to ensure maximum availability and minimize connection lengths, reducing the potential for service disruptions.
The project is a partnership between Storey County and Churchill County Communications as part of a phased rollout plan to enhance internet services across the region. This installation marks the beginning of Phase I, which covers Virginia City and Gold Hill.
Phase II will focus on extending fiber connectivity to the Virginia City Highlands, and Phase III will expand services to Mark Twain and Lockwood.
“This is a significant technological upgrade for Storey County,” said James Deane, IT Director for Storey County. “The fiber distribution system will support 10GB fiber connections between County facilities, making our internet services more scalable, redundant, and secure. Residents and businesses can look forward to enterprise-class speeds, making it easier to use complex data services like cloud storage, hosting, and backup.”
In addition to providing high-speed internet to residents and businesses, the new fiber infrastructure will upgrade County facilities with high-speed connections, enhancing internal communications and operations. Redundant electrical power will be provided to ensure continuous and reliable services at all times, making it a robust solution for the community.
The fiber initiative is a transformative project for Storey County, modernizing the region’s digital infrastructure and creating new opportunities for growth, connectivity, and community development.
As the County progresses through Phases II and III, more residents and businesses will benefit from the improved services and capabilities offered by this advanced technology.
