Sierra Region Economic Council meets for first time
The Northern Nevada Development Authority's newly established advisory body, the Sierra Region Economic Council, met for the first time Wednesday, Sept. 20. SREC is the vehicle that brings diverse groups together who participate in or are affected by economic development of Nevada’s Sierra region including Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties.
The meeting brought conversation and discussion regarding the region’s top priorities and key issues.
The two-hour meeting was chaired by Nevada State Senator James Settelmeyer and held at Western Nevada College. In his closing remarks, Senator Settelmeyer commented to the group that he found the discussions helpful and informative.
The council includes a broad representation of key Sierra Region stakeholders, thought leaders and influencers from business, education, government, housing, infrastructure, and essential services. SREC is intended to foster regional coordination and collaboration between the various stakeholders and business communities. Also, it expects to provide feedback and insights to elected officials and lawmakers about the Sierra Region and the needs of its economic ecosystem.
The current focus of SREC is on addressing the highest priority issues that are affecting the region: workforce development, obtainable housing for a growing workforce, the critical infrastructure needed to support growth, and the maintenance of essential services.
According to Robert “Rob” Hooper, NNDA Executive Director, “The Sierra Region is very large geographically, and its diverse communities are all interconnected and interdependent. What affects one area, town, city or county, affects the entire region.” Hooper continued, “The discussions during yesterday’s meeting provided insights regarding how the counties and communities are already working on solutions to handle the region’s growth and what still needs to be addressed.”
SREC will have its next meeting sometime during Spring 2018.
