NDOT begins work on I-580 through Washoe Valley; lane closures through October
Motorists along I-580 can expect lane closures through Washoe Valley for the rest of September and on weekends into October as the Nevada Department of Transportation begins work this week to repave the aging roadway surface and seismically retrofit bridges.
Southbound I-580 will be reduced to a single lane from 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17 to 5 a.m. Sept. 18 between the exit 50 Bowers Mansion interchange and the I-580/North Carson Street interchange. Then, both directions of interstate will be reduced to one lane from 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18 to 5:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21 for repaving. Similar weekend lane closures will continue through Oct. 24 to complete repaving. The marathon paving sessions are scheduled for overnight and weekend hours to avoid impacting weekday commute travel.
When completed, the work will repave approximately seven miles of interstate surface through Washoe Valley. The interstate was last repaved in 2004, and is in need of resurfacing to keep the roadway smooth and safe, according to NDOT.
Over the next year, the project will also seismically retrofit and enhance the I-580 Bellevue Road bridge and Eastlake Boulevard underpass as part of NDOT’s continuing effort to retrofit older bridges for enhanced safety and stability during potential earthquakes.
An extended auxiliary lane from Alternative U.S. 395/Eastlake Boulevard to southbound I-580 will also be constructed in the Lakeview area, providing additional space and safety to merge. The Bellevue Road overpass and Alternative U.S. 395/Eastlake Boulevard merge to southbound I-580 will be closed intermittently during those road improvements.
The $15 million project by Q & D Construction is scheduled to complete in the fall of 2016. Approximately 32,000 vehicles travel the road daily. See nevadadot.com for more information.
